Former Invicta champ Jessica Penne plans on trying out for TUF 20 spot

Big news in the world of women's MMA, as former Invicta atomweight champion Jessica Penne recently announced her intentions of trying out for TUF 20. Honestly, the idea of her trying out seems a bit silly in and of itself. If she wants a spot on the show I can't think of anything standing in the way of her getting one. Her brash, outspoken personality, coupled with a ton of awesome grappling talent should make her a shoe in for the 20th iteration of the Ultimate Fighter.

Penne announced her intentions via Twitter.

Penne has always seemed really big at 105 lbs. Of course, she used to compete at 115 until a loss to Zoila Gurgel caused her to drop down a division. Penne has improved a lot since then, so I don't know that she'll have trouble competing in terms of size (and Gurgel was pretty big at 115 lbs anyway). The reality of it is that with the UFC maintaining a bantamweight and a straw weight division women at 105, 125, and 145 are going to find themselves in position to add weight or cut it. There are a lot of opportunities for good women athletes in the UFC right now and fighters who can take the leap will be best served by doing so.
Shit just got interesting :D

She's hella impressive on the ground, one to look out for to go to the finals-

I think her trying out is probably going to be because of Dana White's ignorance more then anything else. White maybe on the WMMA bandwagon now but I don't think he pays enough attention to the sport outside of the UFC. Penne should be allowed in though.

She was in an entirely different weightclass when Dana alloted x amount of Strawweight fighters a spot on the cast. It's right she has to tryout. If Penne was Strawweight to begin with, then yes she should've been included.

If that's what you're getting at.

Well I'm sure after the tryout she'll be selected for one of the open spots. Honestly I think a preliminary round is still going to happen. However, I can see all the main women getting easy matches.

When you look at that photo she's obviously proud of winning that belt. But now she has to try out and fight in the premiere organization. It really devalues the Invicta belt and organization sadly. Now for Pride, SF, and Bellator most of the fighters were heavily recruited and given substantial contracts. Apples and oranges I guess. Hope Invicta continues. Female divisions need a platform.

Kanto there is no preliminary round, they tryout, get selected, that's the cast.

The only reason she's trying out is it's not her natural weightclass, she decided to do it after the main fighters were already drafted and signed up.

You're the go to person for wmma. btw: Did you get a hold of cg.

Oh no...what happened to Gina.

CupCake 03-23-2014 02:38 AM

Gina is the old guard, Joane Calderwood is the new guard. And my pick to win TUF 20 :D

CG? No luck.

I'm not sure what to do when it comes to predicting who will win TUF 20. I'll probably cross that bridge when I come to it and make my prediction for the preview article. Right now I'd say Tecia but like I said I haven't looked indepth.
