And symbolism uses symbols not words. Words are not symbols even if they are in a different language. If you want a symbol to represent peace a good idea would be a dove, the ban the bomb symbol, an olive branch. Not the word for peace in Japanese. To anyone who doesn't speak Japanese it is just a tattoo. It doesn't mean anything, it's pointless, redundant. And if you don't care that no-one else knows what it is why put it on display on your skin? Just so you can be all yeah I'm cool and have this mysterious japanese tattoo that you don't know what it means unless I explain it. Guess what? Symbols shouldn't need explaining.

Some of Angelina Jolie's tattoos are OK but that huge cross she has on her hip just looks like it's covering something up (probably something billy bob related).
But I like the prayers down her shoulder blade, the configuration looks nice.

If you have a deep respect for and some knowledge of a culture and you want to evoke it, I think that's OK even if you're not from that culture.

A properly done tattoo that isn't constantly out in the sun will look "fresh" for years.
So either you don't know too much about tattoos and you're just thinking certain ones look fresh or you're just sort of picking at people with tattoos.

I tell you what, my good friend owns a tattoo shop and I spend a good amount of time there.
I have seen COUNTLESS customers come in and ask for there name or a certain word in "asian".
most of them don't even know the difference in Chinese, Japanese, etc...
Its horrible.
I have even seen kids get stuff like FIGHTER and WARRIOR in Japanese. Its embarrassing.

lol I love how people always are like "wait is it chinese or japanese?" ...or "is that guy chinese or japanese" but yet they wanna be part of the culture for some reason they don't even have the capability to distinguish between the 2 races

I have to correct people on that all the time. For some reason, anyone with an asian last name is automatically Chinese.

That's how it is around here too. I tell people I'm part Japanese and they are surprised usually (cuz its ohio), then a few minutes later in the convo they're like "wait so was your mom chinese or was it your dad?" I'm like dude wtf did I just say JA-PA-NESE!!!
