"Minotauro Nogueira and Frank Mir named Ultimate Fighter coaches for season 8
By: MMAmania

Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir has been tabbed as one of two coaches who will appear on season eight of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), which will begin taping soon and is expected to debut on Spike TV sometime in September, according to Yahoo!Sports.com.

His opposing coach is none other than UFC Heavyweight Champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, setting up an eventual blockbuster title match on New Year’s Eve 2008.

This is quite a reversal of fortune for “The Baddest Man on The Planet.” Less than 18 months ago, most were quick to write off Mir as a gifted and technical fighter who could not replicate his previous exploits inside the Octagon after recovering from a near fatal motorcycle wreck.

In fact, he lost two of his first three bouts when he returned to action — and his lone win over Dan Christison during that span was less than impressive.

But things began to turn around for Mir when he submitted Antoni Hardonk with a textbook kimura at UFC 74: “Respect” in August 2007. He did what everyone was waiting for him to do and he looked good doing it.

The “old” Frank Mir was back.

That was no more evident than when in his next bout Mir weathered a brutal attack from the massive Brock Lesnar at UFC 81: “Breaking Point” to pull off a crafty fight-ending submission (kneebar). It appears that the two back-to-back wins, as well as a visible re-dedication to training, has earned Mir another shot at championship glory.

First, however, he will have to train and manage a team of mixed martial arts hopefuls in front of a national television audience. That shouldn’t be a problem because Mir is comfortable in front of a camera thanks to his role as ringside announcer at World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) events.

He also knows a thing or two about Brazilian jiu-jitsu and MMA overall. Mir has a ton of fight experience and he’s not even 30 years old.

Nogueira — who defeated Tim Sylvia to win the interim heavyweight championship at UFC 81 — is the first man ever to hold Pride FC and UFC belts. He is undefeated inside the Octagon (2-0) and will look to win over several new fans (and students) while on the show.

Despite his talent and unrivaled accomplishments, it appears that Nogueira has yet to gain widespread respect and notoriety from casual fans. That could all change … soon.

TUF 8 is expected to feature light heavyweights and lightweights, breaking from recent tradition of focusing on just one weight class. Filming is set to begin soon and the show will run from September through December.

Should be good … and the eventual fight between Mir and Nogueira should be even better."

Well so much for the Vera-Werdum winner getting Nog next rumor. Also it looks like TUF's crappy delaying of title fights just keeps going and going as the filming and running of the show won't end until December.

Your thoughts?

EDIT: Sorry Mods just saw this was already posted in the TUF section my bad. Feel free to delete this.

Mir needs another impressing win to justify a title shot, and Nogueira needs to defend his title at some point before Christmas, so it would be alright imo if they both have one fight before the start of the next TUF season.

Then if Nog still has the title but Mir is coming from a loss it will be kind of stupid, but at least better than if neither of them have a single fight for a year.

Reckless? I think not. It's just that he doesn't get KO'ed. Syvlia, Crocop, etc are all reallly realllllly good strikers and it's almost impossible to think that they wouldn't catch someone with a big hit sooner or later.

I think Nog is the best man to represent MMA cause it shows how much heart this man has, that he never gives up. Nog is actually pretty technical, even in the standup, just when facing guys like Sylvia or Crocop then it's definitely a disadvantage to him.

Your opinion is almost saying GSP is reckless since Serra KO'ed him :dunno:, only difference is if it were Nog, he woulda came back and won (nothing against GSP, I <3 him too)

If Nog and Mir faught, then Werdum would get the title shot if he beat Vera which is easy to understand, but theeeen what.

This has to be Dana White putting the HW division on hold till shit starts to get figured out!

But who is he going to sign to reinforce the HW division? Sylvia, Fedor, Arlovski, Barnett are all with affliction, and Couture probably will join them soon. Mark Hunt said he was going to fight at Dream and think, I don't know what is Kharitonov doing ATM, maybe he is the one the HW division needs.

Maybe one of the up and comers can make a name for himself (Cain or Shane Carwin), or Gonzaga can get into the title picture or Cro Cop can make his return, or Kongo/Herring can seperate themselves from the pack.

Let's hope so because if not the HW division is fucked. Gonzaga has to string at least 3 wins I would say in order to get a title shot, I say put him against Herring, if Herring wins then he can fight the loser of Vera/Werdum and if he wins that I would give him a shot, 3 wins against solid opponents is pretty good, if Gonzaga wins then the same plus fighting Kongo later. Cain is a good prospect but he still has to prove a lot of things before being a contender, I would like to see him fight Lesnar. Cro Cop will take a while to come back, and even then Nog already beat him when he was in his prime, I don't know if he Mirko could beat him now. Kongo needs to improve his ground game a lot before he is ready for Nog.

Yeah, but since Arlovski just left the UFC there's no one more deserving, it's sad but true. Plus Mir is the most marketable opponent right now, he got a lot of exposure with the Lesnar fight, and is a former champ.

Edit: Well, I think Vera is more deserving, but he lost recently.

I can understand tying the belt up since the HW division is so thin, even if it results in Mir getting a unearned title shot. But why arent they doing a full season of HW prospects?? The 2 divisions they are doing for the show already are stacked with talented veterans and good up and comers.

So wait....

We're not going to get a HW title fight for like a year. We're going to get a full season of broken English (no offense to Minotauro, it's not his first language) and teaching guys how to scarf down a dozen donuts. They're going to bring in more guys into two already incredibly stacked divisions. And then to top it all off we get to see Minotauro destroy a guy who "earned" his shot by beating Hardonk and Lesnar?

Oh I am so f'n excited! Sign me up! :confused05::sarcastic05:

Remember when you used to see the top fighters fight 3-4 times a year each. Good times. Now you get TUF instead. . .
