"Minotauro Nogueira and Frank Mir named Ultimate Fighter coaches for season 8
By: MMAmania

Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir has been tabbed as one of two coaches who will appear on season eight of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), which will begin taping soon and is expected to debut on Spike TV sometime in September, according to Yahoo!Sports.com.

His opposing coach is none other than UFC Heavyweight Champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, setting up an eventual blockbuster title match on New Year’s Eve 2008.

This is quite a reversal of fortune for “The Baddest Man on The Planet.” Less than 18 months ago, most were quick to write off Mir as a gifted and technical fighter who could not replicate his previous exploits inside the Octagon after recovering from a near fatal motorcycle wreck.

In fact, he lost two of his first three bouts when he returned to action — and his lone win over Dan Christison during that span was less than impressive.

But things began to turn around for Mir when he submitted Antoni Hardonk with a textbook kimura at UFC 74: “Respect” in August 2007. He did what everyone was waiting for him to do and he looked good doing it.

The “old” Frank Mir was back.

That was no more evident than when in his next bout Mir weathered a brutal attack from the massive Brock Lesnar at UFC 81: “Breaking Point” to pull off a crafty fight-ending submission (kneebar). It appears that the two back-to-back wins, as well as a visible re-dedication to training, has earned Mir another shot at championship glory.

First, however, he will have to train and manage a team of mixed martial arts hopefuls in front of a national television audience. That shouldn’t be a problem because Mir is comfortable in front of a camera thanks to his role as ringside announcer at World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) events.

He also knows a thing or two about Brazilian jiu-jitsu and MMA overall. Mir has a ton of fight experience and he’s not even 30 years old.

Nogueira — who defeated Tim Sylvia to win the interim heavyweight championship at UFC 81 — is the first man ever to hold Pride FC and UFC belts. He is undefeated inside the Octagon (2-0) and will look to win over several new fans (and students) while on the show.

Despite his talent and unrivaled accomplishments, it appears that Nogueira has yet to gain widespread respect and notoriety from casual fans. That could all change … soon.

TUF 8 is expected to feature light heavyweights and lightweights, breaking from recent tradition of focusing on just one weight class. Filming is set to begin soon and the show will run from September through December.

Should be good … and the eventual fight between Mir and Nogueira should be even better."

Well so much for the Vera-Werdum winner getting Nog next rumor. Also it looks like TUF's crappy delaying of title fights just keeps going and going as the filming and running of the show won't end until December.

Your thoughts?

EDIT: Sorry Mods just saw this was already posted in the TUF section my bad. Feel free to delete this.

If Mir work on his standup and conditionning, I think they can pull off an amazing fighr. One thing : It must go the ground.

I wish yous would realize its not the just TUF that is holding up the title fights, its the damn bad timing UFC has with TUF. Look at how the Rampage/Griffin season was set up. If they would have done the season immediately after UFC 76, we wouldnt have had to wait so long, but they decided to wait till like after 79 to do it so the timing just sucked and make us wait even longer. Same thing with this 7th season, Nogueira and Mir fought back in February. If they would have done the TUF season right after UFC 81, we wouldnt have to be waiting a year for a title shot.

I think Mir and Nogueira will be good coaches, but obviously lack the personality of others like Ken, Tito, Rampage, Griffin, BJ. I'm pumped to see Nogueira on TUF, never thought I'd say that.

I think the ufc should consider using the TUF hype machine for the heavyweights, I know the fights wouldn't be good but they need some names in there.

Booo for holding off the HW title and boo for letting the next man be Mir. Winner of Vera Werdum would have been perfect. What makes me saddest is that on of my top 3 fighters now won't fight until forever :(

Nog isn't getting any younger or faster. Seriously, the man needs to defend his Title before doing this damn show. And is Mir really above Werdum? Vera? I know Mir is more marketable for TV, I guess, but has the UFC's HW gotten this bad to where Frank Mir is fighting for the Title after going 3-2 in his last 5?

Vera lost his last fight, sure, but it was to Tim Sylvia and he broke his hand in the first round. His win before that? Mir.

Werdum would even be better than Mir in my opinion, but good God, it really makes you realize how bad the HW Division is.

Maybe Nog needs to recover from the damage he took from Sylvia. Also, I heard something about his eye not being 100%, that could take a while to fix!

If that's not an issue I wonder wtf they are thinking!
