I honestly found the 1st 2 episodes boring, but the 3rd one was great!

I don't know about you guys, but I don't care about these guy's personalities. I want to judge them by their skill in the cage, not by how nice they are or how funny they are. It poisons the sport aspect IMO.

I could do without all the girlish drama.
You personally could do without the girlish drama but the show can't. Without the drama the show would be dead.

Did Boxing, Football, Soccer, Nascar, or any other sport that you can think of need a "Reality Show" to grow?

Not that I can think of. I actually think the approach is going to strangle the sport in the long-term.

There was a once a mysterious allure as to what drove these athletes to fight. That is timeless.

This generation of fighters is driven by 15 minutes of fame, a fat paycheck, and chicks... All thanks to "The Ultimate Fighter".

For the short term it's big money. But if they don't re-structure this approach it will eventually lose a lot of interest because people get entirely too sick of the antics we are complaining about on this very thread, and anyone into the sport will be branded as one of these immature a-holes.

Just my opinion, of course.
No, those sports didn't need a reality show, but this is a different day and age and the reality show has helped the sport grow. If boxing or football was the new big thing instead of something that has been around for years then they would use a reality show now to so they could grow. In fact, a lot of these sports do have a reality show as somebody pointed out. Reality shows and youtube are the new ways to promote. Thats just how it is.

Did any of you watch the Contender?
Wasn't that show cancelled, sold to another network, cancelled again, and now possibly going to be back on TV again?

And how do you know that? Have you seen TUF without the girlish drama?

No.

So it's hard to say the show needs it without any factual basis for the claim.

Yeah, but the Reality Show format is becoming stale, don't you think. All reality shows have been doing basically the same thing for almost ten years. The format will crumble and go the way of all other fads soon.

The difference between TUF and other sports "Reality Shows" is that the other sports already had a stong following before the shows began airing.

TUF is INTRODUCING people to MMA with these drunken losers. I have to stress from my earlier post that YES, IT'S GOOD FOR THE SHORT TERM, but the sport has to be able to flourish without the douchery or it will fade away like a fad in THE LONG TERM with casuals.

I think Spike plays up the drinking a lot in the editing process beccause it makes good ratings. Remember they record a full week of footage from probably a dozen cameras, that's got to be a few hundred hours at least that they pare down to a single 42 minute episode of which up to 1/3 could be taken up by the fight itself.

So we don't really know what they do most nights, I doubt Spike has much interest in airing the footage from the nights everyone was too well-behaved or tired to do anything but eat, talk a little, and go to bed. It may seem like they drink a lot but honestly I think few if any are getting plastered every other night.

A reality show without girlish drama is a reality show that is destined to be a failure that gets cancelled. Its common sense. Thats why the drunken drama is shown.

Your right, all those other sports did have a strong huge following. And thats something that this reality show will help MMA create. Its only going to introduce more people to the sport. That is good for the long term because long after the show is over the fans brought in who like the sport will stay fans.

Maybe. But maybe not.

Maybe the people they are attracting through this tactic just want to see blood, or drunk tough guys brawling. Or maybe all they care about is the girlish drama and a TV show.

Maybe they are turning off "real" sports fans like possible converts from boxing and other "serious" sports.

We won't know until the time comes.

Dana has said he will be launching another show soon, it could very well be the one to fit the more sport-oriented (and less drama-filled) niche. Think of how awesome it would be if there was a weekly UFC show that featured say, two or three live fights featuring established fighters ?
