Roli Delgado Talks Junie, Mir, & Black Belt

Quote:
Roli Delgado, the latest fighter to be eliminated from this season of "The Ultimate Fighter" season 8, spoke to MMAWeekly.com about his fight with Junie Browning, the black belt controversy, Frank Mir, and his future in the sport.

While the show portrayed a strong feud building in the house, to the weigh-ins, all the way to the fight between Delgado and Browning, it's Roli Delgado himself that says he had no ill will at all towards his opponent before or after the fight.

"They probably asked me 45 questions to get to 'Junie needs his ass kicked and I'm the one that's going to do it.' They make it seem like that guy upset me at the weigh-ins, but if you see me laughing, I promise you those are genuine laughs," Delgado stated. "A guy like Junie Browning can't get under my skin. I like Junie; he's not a bad guy. He's kind of (expletive) up, but he's not a bad guy. But Junie Browning can't get under my skin. It would be like a 5th grader trying to pick a fight with you. You're not going to respond and get into an arguing match with a 5th grader, that's how I felt about Junie."

One particular subject that Delgado will still respond to though is the allegation that was raised in the house that he was somehow not a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, along with Frank Mir, who seemed to agitate the situation.

"It was very disrespectful," Delgado disclosed about the whole situation. "Frank Mir's very immature trying to call me out in front of people like that. I had no problem explaining my jiu-jitsu, who I've trained with and where I've come from and stuff that's fine.

"He asked me who I got my black belt from and I told him, the guy's a third degree black belt under Carlos Gracie, and you can't really get more reputable than Gracie-Barra and then he starts asking me follow up questions and they take that and they edit it and it makes it look like I have this big long story."

At the end of the day due to editing, people were questioning Delgado's legitimacy, and he says that people will also more than likely make an assumption about Frank Mir, as they following the show.

"I have to deal with people that aren't in the sport that are just going to watch that show and they're going to assume that maybe I'm not a legit black belt," Delgado stated. "That's a shame. But he's going to have to live with the fact that people are watching the show and they think he's an (expletive)."

After all the drama in the house, Delgado got back to business at hand and his fight with Junie Browning. The two lightweights fought a three-round battle, but Delgado says the original plan was to use his jab and then set up for a takedown if it became available, but unfortunately the fight ended differently.

"I was too busy staying behind my jab, and that's a different game, you're a little further away from the guy," said Delgado about the gameplan. "Basically, mixed martial arts you've got to bring all this stuff together and that was part of my game that's still evolving and something I've been working on."

One thing that was for sure at fight's end was the Delgado had a tremendous chin, but he commented that fans shouldn't assume that means Browning didn't have much pop in his punch.

"He hits hard, because the body shots hurt more than the head shots, and people are kind of questioning his power right now, but I think it's a little more that I have a decent chin," he said. "If anybody doesn't think he hits hard, you're going to see him dropping some cats in his next few fights."

In the end, Browning got the nod in a three-round fight and Delgado agreed.

"I'm going to be honest with you, I think it was a fair decision."

So what's next for Roli Delgado? Well besides running his own gyms and preparing other fighters for a future in MMA, he believes his path leads to the featherweight division and is hopeful for a chance in the WEC down the road.

"My goal is to get into the WEC," Delgado stated. "I'll fight at 155 for sure, I've got no problem doing that, but we're talking about my long term goals. I think my career's going to be at 145. I'm a better fighter there, and it's not a hard cut."

I did fell bad for him when Mir called him out in front of everyone. To me I am losing more and more respect for Mir at this season goes on.

Featherweight??? I thought Delgado appeared to be kinda puny already, it definetly didn't look like he needed to lose ten pounds!

Yeah I agree with you about Mir, you can tell that Big Nog is just way more evolved then Frank; not just as a fighter but as a human.

Mir's just... not as great at being a leader, he seems to let his team do whatever they like and I honestly think the way it's edited on TV makes it look like he doesn't care. I can't imagine Nog letting anyone in his team get away with behaving like Junie in the house, nor do I think he'd let them be disrespectful in general. He wouldn't let it slide like Mir has, he'd take care of business.

If Junie was on Nogueria's team, I think Nogueria would personally train Junie each day and instill pain on him. Respect or get beat.
