I suppose to anyone living in the UK or Ireland we're so used to hearing the accents that we don't need it. But, by way of example, when the Irish film the Commitments was released in the US in the early 90s the entire thing had to be subtitled cause innar ci'ee dublin accents couldn't be understood.

While I don't personally have a problem understanding UK accents (most of them, most of the time anyway) The reason why North American english is more easily understood by the world is because it is actually CLEARLY annunciated. There is nothing wrong with the UK accents, but it wasn't always as mumbled at times in it's beginnings as it is in many places nowadays. Its just a natural evolution of speech, without many of the same rules to it. So at times when it sounds like a pack of dogs barking to North America, they put subtitles on it. (It was completely unnecessary on TUF, however.)

Hendo was the only one that really needed subtitles.

Those lads in Tennessee have very CLEAR English dont they?

I love the accent but i struggle to understand it,nothing wrong with that i'm just not used to hearing it.

On the Contrary really regarding the English language,it has ALWAYS been 'mumbled' in England anyway.
The 'Geordie' accent is the oldest 'English' in the isles,we use a lot of Old Saxon and Norse words which are the oldest form off English.

Accents today have been watered down by Television,my accents the same as Ross Pearsons but even i struggled when my Grandparents (RIP) were in full flow!
The older Generation of Northumbrians have a much thicker accent than we do.
Here's a poem read by Basil bunting,he's reading in the Northumbrian accent.

My wife could not understand. I could most of it, sometimes took me a second longer to understand exactly what had been said.

i have a very easy time with accents with my mom from Raccoon Mountain, Tennesee & my dad from Spanishtown, Jamacia.

what i have found is that in the US, most people do not have a good grasp of accents at all. hell, we argue over silly wording of stuff from different parts of the country (pop vs soda vs tonic; grinder vs sub vs hoagy) never mind other country's colloquialisms!

Plus I think that we in Europe have a far better grasp of American accents because of popular culture. We all grow up with American movies, tv and music and get used to a whole host of accents from across the states. The same can't be said there. Although the first time I was ever in NYC I woke up to find that the Irish film the Van was on tv. Im from Dublin and I can barely understand half of it, so I've no idea how American's would.
