I think that Michael Johnson really has a lack of submission defense, but with his strength and wrestling, St. Pierre could teach him to be more patient and to basically look to control fighters with good guards, rather than to make mistakes and perhaps be overly aggressive and get caught. I'm guessing by his record that he tends to make mistakes when taking fighters down. St. Pierre is a good coach for him because we all know that St. Pierre is the best at controlling opponents on the ground in the welterweight division.

True, but what I see in this season is a lot of guys with good submissions and Johnson's submission defense is what gave him a record of 6-5 with 4 losses by submission. When I made that statement I didn't take into consideration that Brookins, Caceres, McKenzie and Watson are on his team - so he won't fight them in the first round. Sako and especially Wilkinson would be nightmare matchups for Johnson. Against Stevens it would come down to who has the better wrestling game, but I think Stevens would outstrike Johnson. If he has to fight any of these three I think he will lose.

What exactly is Johnson's record? On our "full cast revealed" thread it says his record is 8-4 which isn't bad, although on sherdog fighter finder there are 2 lightweights with the name Michael Johnson. One is 8-4 which we would assume is him, and the other is 6-5. I just have trouble believing that St. Pierre and Koscheck would want him as their number one pick if had such a mediocre record like that.

Michael Johnson's record is 8-4....still has the sub problems but it was much better than the 6-5 guy we were led to believe pre-show.

Well they just signed the guy that he beat to fight at WEC 51, so either it was clearly a fluke win or Michael Johnson goes really far.

M.J. has a ways to go, it seems.

Edit - Maybe not. Man handled his business in the third, lol.

Holy premature promo Batman, I just prenognosticated that RNC by Johnson in the 3rd round thanks to that commercial for the Stephan Bonnar show where they showed it before it happened in the fight on air.

Wilkinson should have put away Johnson on multiple occasions, I mean he was begging for a guillotine, I'm pretty sure the guy is going to get subbed in the second fight.

Things are looking real bad for team Koscheck, yeah they've still got Sayers to fight but Brookins, McKenzie, Paige, and Watson are looking mean and I'm guessing tiny Nam Phan is up next.

So Johnson was the consensus number one pick by both coaching squads for this year? THIS is the best they have to offer? The quality of fighters gets worse every season it seems like. Johnson isn't terrible but he has huge holes in his game. Good takedowns which means almost nothing because his top control is non existant. When your best prospect has a record of 8-4 what does that say about the rest of the guys? Ugh.
