Johnson manages to take it, now he can get crushed by Brookins in the final. I can't remember ever seeing a fighter with worse top control than Johnson, he never does a thing on top. He actually has decent takedowns but they're almost useless since he does nothing with them.
How did you possibly score the third for him? Seriously. He got out struck on the feet for all but 30 seconds and every time he took Nam down he just got elbowed in the head until Nam decided to he wanted to stand up. He did NOTHING to him outside of a couple flurries. Meanwhile Nam was landing far more shots and landing them more effectively, stuffing almost every one of Johnson's takedowns and he only got pinned to the fence for like a whole 10 seconds before he spun out every time.
I'm not going to comment too much on the decision. By the way the rules are set, Johnson edged it.
Now, his takedowns should amount to nothing, and apart from I thought he landed more power shots and pressed the action.
I don't think by any means its a grand injustice to give it Johnson.
As for the final, it actually sets up a pretty intriguing match up.
Brookins has been able to cruise because none of his opponents had a great wrestling game. Johnson does. Add to that, the fact that Brookins stand up is mediocre, and Johnson has a decent chance at doing some damage.
However, I think that if Brookins manages a takedown, he'll sub Johnson fairly easily.
Johnson deff won that 3rd round. he showed alot of heart. The not taping up Nam's gloves annoyed me...it was clearly bothing him and the ref should of done something.
I thought the nod should have gone Nam's way, but as DW always says, "Never leave it in the hands of the judges". That being said unless Johnson does something to seriously change it up Brookins is going to maul him on saturday.
Yeah I thought it was a good decision, I wouldn't have been outraged if Phan won. Phan got more strikes in but Johnson clearly did more damage, had the take downs, and was the aggressor for most of the fight. Like Koscheck said if Phan would have gotten one take down at the end of the round, or busted him open, or dropped him he would have won.
Regardless Brookins is going to murder Johnson...which is ironic seeing as Phan is so good at choking Johnsons.
I actually think that Brookins is a good Match-up for MJ. I don't see Brookins getting a takedown on MJ and I don't see him outstriking him either. It's a BJJ guy vs. a superior wrestler and striker.
Brookins has the most impressive wrestling pedigree in the house (he was a Div 1 wrestler and state champion in Oregon). I would be very surprised if Michael Johnson can survive three rounds with Brookins.
I belive Phan would've been a tougher fight for Brookins than MJ. But either way, Brookins will win this.
The man has been 10 minutes In a cage agaist Jose Aldo, and that alone Is pretty bad ass!
Don't forget earlier in the season when he was taking GSP down in practice. Johnson typically shoots in and tries to overwhelm his opponent in the first round, gas in the 2nd and win in the 3rd. He's not going to overwhelm Brookins, I think now after watching the two semi's he's the easiest win for Brookins.
I hope he gains the confidence to stick with LW as he could make a bigger impact and have higher profile fights. With that said the whole point of this season was to bring in a generation of TUFers to fight at FW.
Nam won that fight, BS decision. It all comes down to how you perceive take downs. Johnson got take downs and it was nam phan opening him on the ground, doing damage and then quickly getting back to his feet.
Im sick and ******* tired of take downs winning fights, it really is annoying.
Close first round, but Johnson won. 2nd round Nam and third round Nam.
Great fight and this has been a really entertaining season imo.
I'm sorry but I gotta disagree. Nam definitely landed good shots in the first round, but took a beat down.
Second rd, Johnson was the aggressor for the first two minutes then when he couldn't take Nam down, he gassed and Nam began to work him for another 2 minutes. But in the last minute, Johnson mustard of some courage, put on a flurry, and in my opinion, stole that round.
3rd round was very close. Nam landed some nasty shots. Johnson landed some nasty shots. People say that Johnson won because of cheap takedowns but In my opinion, it wasn't the takedowns at all that won him the fight, it was his dominant flurries.
My heart goes out to Nam. He worked the hardest the whole entire season and that, in my opinion, should have earned him a spot in the finale. But when it came down to the last round, he just fought a Michael Johnson that refused to lose.
Always amazed how takedowns mean more than damage these days. Phan made Johnson stand with him and once they were on the ground it was Phan throwing elbows and getting up. At one point I'm sure Phan even dove for a triangle in round 3, didn't get it, threw some elbows and got straight back up. When they announced the split decision I just knew they were screwing Nam over.
Anyway, Brookins will win this easily now. It's gonna be a first round submission.

Well that was the issue, Phan works the body and he didn't cut him or drop him. Johnson got the take downs, Johnson was the aggressor and Johnson cut him and Phan barely beat him on the stand up. It was his corners fault for not preparing him for the fight....he should have gone into that third round prepped for the takedown...not in the last 20 seconds.
Or maybe Koscheck should have just kept screaming "your winning the round NAM your winning"
I had this for Johnson, even without the takedowns. I thought he was more aggressive throughout with his striking, moving forward all the time, and letting his hands go in bunches.Think Nam has a good chin, he took more than a few shots, and a couple of body shots from him weren't enough for me.
In the third, again Nam was clearly getting the better of the stand up exchanges.
If you have Spike TV and find yourself bored on a Saturday morning, turn it on... they are playing every ep. from this season in an all day marathon leading up to the finale. Starts in ten minutes.
Wow just watching the finale....What the hell kind of decision is that are the judges high!?!
Nam Phan was ROBBED!!! That's gotta be the stupidest call in UFC history. Worse than Bisping/Hamill. Garcia got his ass kicked and he knew it.
Absolute bullshit!!!!
On a lighter note...Johnny Hendricks looks like mini arlovski!
