Lesnar and JDS to coach TUF 13

Quote:
After months of speculation and more than a dozen rumored names, the UFC today announced heavyweight contenders Brock Lesnar and Junior Dos Santos will be coaches on the upcoming 13th season of "The Ultimate Fighter."

The announcement came via UFC.com.

"The Ultimate Fighter 13" debuts March 30 on Spike TV, and a live finale is slated for June 4. The coaches meet in a season-ending fight at an event to be announced.

Although initially announced as a middleweight and welterweight season of the UFC's long-running reality series, MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) reported earlier this week that producers instead opted to make "TUF 13" a welterweights-only show. Production begins this month in Las Vegas. In an elimination round of fights, 28 hopefuls will fight for 14 official cast spots. The show uses a 32-slot tournament, which includes two "wild card" picks who earn a second life in the quarterfinals.

Over the past couple months, many UFC veterans had been rumored for potential "TUF 13" coaching slots, including Frankie Edgar, Gray Maynard, Frank Mir, Shane Carwin, Wanderlei Silva, Chael Sonnen, Chris Leben, Brian Stann, Dominick Cruz, Urijah Faber, Anthony Pettis, Jose Aldo and others. Ultimately, though, officials went with the big men, Lesnar and Dos Santos.

Lesnar (5-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) is a former titleholder who lost his belt to current champ Cain Velasquez in October. The former WWE star has emerged as the UFC's top pay-per-view draw, and his inclusion in "TUF" should translate to big ratings.

Dos Santos (12-1 MMA, 6-0 UFC), meanwhile, recently claimed top-contender status by posting a 6-0 record in the UFC. Recent wins have come over Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, Gilbert Yvel, Gabriel Gonzaga and Roy Nelson.

"TUF" debuted in 2005 and proved a ratings hit. It also helped the UFC's and MMA's move into the mainstream. Since the debut season, the show has launched the career of more than 100 UFC fighters, and past cast members Forrest Griffin, Rashad Evans and Matt Serra went on to win UFC titles.

I don't like 3 things here:

1) Lesnar shouldn't get a shot at the nr.1 contendership straight after losing the belt. If Brock beats JDS then he fights Cain and Cain's first title defense is a rematch with the previous champion HE JUST DESTROYED!?

2)) How is Brock supposed to coach welterweights?

3) JDS doesn't speak English, how is he going to coach his guys?

LOL, you make some valid points. I love Brock and a staunch supporter, which is why I don't like #2 either. Assuming Brock somehow beats JDS, it'd still be too soon for him to rematch Cain. Not that I believe Brock will ever beat Cain, but Brock needs more experience to even be competitive. I personally don't want to see Brock thrown into the Lion's Den with Cain so soon.

JDS better pick up all the Brazilians, lol.

I really don't like the idea of either of them coaching TUF. Most of the fighters will have more experience than Brock. And what happened to JDS being the guaranteed #1 contender? This just really doesn't make any sense.

Fair play to the UFC. Maynard v Edgar would have been a complete snooze fest. And I wouldn't say it was easy convincing Brock to do it, he's so private, plus the WWE was throwing money at him to come back. Can't WAIT to see this now.

Doesn't make sense timeline wise. Is this confirmed? JDS just wants to fight, if he wanted to wait another six months plus to fight why not wait for Cain?

If this is true I can't WAIT though! More JDS!!!

Totally mismatched coaches though. Why not just use Cain as coach? He can coach while he recovers and fight JDS when he's better and the show is over.

And JDS speaks more than enough English to coach.

JDS had to agree to this and JDS had already stated he wants to fight for an interim rather then wait for Cain's recovery. No one is forcing JDS' hand to do this. He begged for an interim fight and he got an interim opponent, not to mention JDS would benefit like crazy from the exposure in TUF.
