Spike picks the fighters

Dana and company pick out a few guys they like from rolling and striking and then they go to a interview process done by spike and this is whether they get sent home or go on.

I personally don't like this, they don't pick the best fighters but the best personalities for ratings. I don't even think this is that beneficial to them, when people see fighters gassing mid round 1, they tend to stop watching future episodes.

the whole process is silly if you ask me. 2 mins to gauge a fighters potential is ridiculous. plus the whole spike interview thing is silly, i understand they need to do that for the rating but i think it would be better if they hunt for the best fighters and then give them a crash course in tv ratings.

I saw this a couple seasons ago.....The best fighter only make it in if they have some angle.....they will throw in the partiers and hot heads in front of the better guys

TUF is a farce, what else is new?

IIRC Kendall Grove once said that they were encouraging him to behave like a 10 year old in the house so they had enough tape to put something on the show.

MMA-Matt 03-31-2011 02:08 AM

That explains that loser that was smoking & drinking on the last TUF! Clearly someone who doesn't take the sport seriously. And didn't Bruce Leeroy have a mediocre at best record too?

Dtwizzy2k5 03-31-2011 02:25 AM

Not surprising at all. I've been saying for a long time that TUF fighters are garbage, and talentless clowns for the most part. And dont give me that "oh look at Florian, Forrest, Rashad" nonsense because that was many years ago and the reality is that TUF hasnt produced legit talent in a LONG time.

AlphaDawg 03-31-2011 02:38 AM

Can you blame them? It's a reality show. They NEED personalities. It's cool and all to see the best fighters out there but what the hell are they supposed to fill the other 30 minutes of the show with when they're not fighting or training? Them awkwardly making conversation about the weather and playing pool? I think not.

When the guy won last season, I had literally no idea who he was. Sure he was the best in the house, but he had the personality of a wet carrot and never did anything worth recording.

anderton46 03-31-2011 08:22 AM

It clearly not JUST personalities, I'd say about quarter of them are brought in ahead of guys with better skills, but most of them are solid.

People need to see past that and understand the point of TUF

the point of TUF is not to bring in new fighters, the point of TUF is to bring in new viewers.

they don't need it to bring in new fighters, they already have bought basically all the promotions out there for that.

It makes perfect sense, if you're targeting a mainstream audience to cast this more like a real TV show than for a fighting contract.

The guy who'll win this will eventually be good enough to hang with the "pros" in a few fights, but they don't really get a free pass.

In the end, they'll take the best guys they can and let natural selection work in the octagon.

TUF = a commercial

and everybody knows that in commercial, they don't really show anything at all of the real thing, they just make it so you want to buy it.

UFC wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for Zuffa communication, and TUF is a big part of it. and because of this, there can actually be fighters who make a living out of it, because tons of people actually pay to see them fight.

I see it as an acceptable and enjoyable compromise, if it brings in new fans, I see it as a positive thing, specially if that leads to a wider acceptance of the sport.

TUF has always been a Trojan Horse to get MMA into as many homes as possible and bring in new fans. And it's worked. Of course they are putting guys they think will have some camera appeal on the show over a guy that maybe doesn't. The guys that are really good but don't play well on reality TV will just have to 'do work' and keep winning, break out the old fashioned way.
