on JDS coaching

This was taken from a blog on MMAJUNKIE by Lew who is JDS' wrestling coach.

I thought this part was very interesting, seems there might be more friction between the coaches then the fighters this season.

Quote:
Myself and the other coaches were starting to butt heads already. Junior had never coached before, and fights and trains as a heavyweight, which means he doesn't cut weight, nor has he fought at a pace that isn't conducive to a heavyweight fight. Junior has a limited understanding of English. This and my wrestling is why I was brought in. In the season opener, Junior said pretty much the same thing. His other coaches felt differently, and the tension was mounting.

Junior decided to bring in a strength coach that was not very good at his job, or at least explaining why he was having the guys train in such a manner. The Brazilian coaches felt I was pushing too hard because I was trying to maximize the time we had in the gym. Before the fight, it became an issue. I would suggest an aggressive yet normal approach to maximize the guys time and skills, trying to be more efficient. Junior and the other staff decided it was a wrestling vs. jiu-jitsu thing.

Honestly, I was ready to join Keon on the way out the door. But I had to remind myself that I was here to help these young men reach their goals. The other coaches in my opinion were there to create an image for themselves to increase their appeal to American fans. So far, they had shown me they wanted to tell the world they were on "TUF" with "JDS." I am not sure if it was the production or the other coaches, but before long, Junior began to become more concerned with camera time and Americans seeing his face than the objective of helping these young men.

The Brazilian coaches said they felt that wrestling was boring and the way wrestlers trained was stupid. In a short amount of time, I went from "the guy that Junior was glad to have helping" to "the stupid wrestler that Junior felt was getting too much attention." He even made it clear that he was the coach, this was his team, he was fighting for the belt and this was about him. I told Junior that I was there for the kids, that he invited me here to help these guys become better wrestlers, better fighters, and even more importantly, better men. I wanted Junior's team to win the show. I think he saw things another way.

I think JDS' wrestling coach on the show is a total asshole, he thinks this is his fifteen minutes of fame and he's milking it. JDS is too nice of a guy to confront him right away but I'm hoping this next episode he really tells him who's boss.

The show is about improving the fighters skills. Whoever wins at the end, is simply guaranteed a contract. But everyone on the show if they improve can get a shot in the UFC, that's been proven a million times. If you win a few fights in boring wrestling-esque fashion then lose, I doubt Dana is going to be calling you down the line.

Aye, it sounds like this guy himself is looking for a bit of attention. I don't know him well enough to comment fairly, but I'll wait and see for myself how JDS progresses or regresses throughout the show.

This is probably a massive generalisation but from most of the wrestling coaches i've seen or heard any interviews with or anything like that - They all seem to think wrestling is the be all and end all and massively undervalue other disciplines - From watching the show this guy seem no different.

JDS wrestling coach seems like a bitter, jealous, guy who couldnt cut it as a fighter who is insane or drugged enough to think he has all the answers.

He's not there to help anyone with their game or help them improve, hes just there to be on tv and get his free TUF t-shirt.

How ironic. This dude never stops talking shit and has gotten the most screen time out of all the assistant coaches. He was saying how Cope sucked at everything and would be an easy fight for Javier. Then Javier lost.

He should just keep his mouth shut.

Will make predictions for credits. Please, I'm so broke.

Maybe Javier lost because he sucks even more?
just saying...

Also, we can't know if it is true because it hasn't aired yet, but the dude makes some valid points in the OP article...IMHO of course

What is it with black people and TUF drama?

Last season it was GSP's "male nurse", this time its JDS' "male wrestling coach".

Part of me wonders if Spike tv doesn't scout black people known for drama + controversy and put them on the show hoping something happens to -> boost ratings.

Its always the token black guy on the foreign, non-american team with controversy and drama surrounding him.

Ditto with Jamie Yager, Alex Caceres, etc.

Maybe, they think they can re-create Kimbo level ratings this way?
