Weight cutting can be dangerous. Generally, you want a professional with the right credentials, involved. Lew Polley is a wrestling coach. He's not a personal trainer, a strength or conditioning guy who has invested a lot of time and energy into fully educating themselves about the negatives involved with different methods of cutting weight.
I don't blame JDS for sticking with what he knows. Filming a reality show isn't a good time to experiment with new methods?
In terms of losing water, it may be that the faster you lose it, the more unhealthy it is. If you drop weight slowly over a long period of time -- that's the most healthy standard. Losing a ton of water, very quickly, in a very short period of time is the most unhealthy.
When Lew brags about his fighter losing, what was it, 5 pounds in 10 minutes(something like that)? I think, shedding water super quickly isn't the way to do it. Doing it at a slower rate, over a longer period of time, is the way to go.
I could be wrong, though. I'm no expert. Mostly, I just don't like Lew's attitude and him trying to hustle the brazilians and make them look bad to try to look good on tv.
