Dana: 'We really made a big mistake not having guys fight to get into the TUF house

Not happy with this season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF)? Neither is UFC President Dana White.
One of the early criticisms directed at TUF 13 was the decision to select 16 contestants for the Spike TV reality show without requiring them to fight for a final spot in the competition.
In seasons past, the premiere would feature 32 aspiring fighters slugging it out for the right to bunk at the TUF house. That, according to White, was a luxury they couldn't afford after the cable television network reduced the number of episodes for this season.
That left TUF coaches Brock Lesnar and Junior dos Santos with eight welterweights apiece -- and nothing to indicate how they would perform until it was for all the marbles.
White wanted to make sure he had enough episodes to tell each fighter's story and decided to exclude the elimination round. It was a "big mistake" that he vows "will never happen again."

I couldn't agree more.

agreed, 100%
but TUF13 started very slow and is gradually getting better with the last 2 episodes.
but next time, some thrash talk between the coaches would be nice
what about diego sanchez vs nick diaz ? I don't really picture diego coaching (neither, you know, diaz, you know... they'll have to make 90 minutes episodes)
you get the idea
bring back the prelims, bring back the thrash talk

I hated the start of the show but it has gotten a lot better in recent episodes.

Its tough because it makes for much better television but not for a better name for the UFC. Although plying a bunch of semi psychopathic young men from broken homes does make for some awesome car crash television it gives a really bad view of the UFC and MMA in general. I agree with more fights though, because lets be honest, we wouldn't watch TUF if it wasn't for the fights.

This is a down cycle but they've been really good with talent. You look at season's 6, 8, and 9 and the talent classes have been fairly paltry you look at the last three talent classes and they've been respectable.
- LW's Pedro Garza, Kyle Watson, Cody McKenzie, Nam Phan, Michael Johnson, Jonathan Brookins
- MW's Nick Ring, Court Mcgee, Brad Tavares, Kyle Noke, Kris McCray, Rich Attonito
- HW's Roy Nelson, Brendan Schaub, Matt Mitrione, Jon Madsen

They need to start focusing more on finding talent rather than personalities. I understand it's a reality show and you need to keep it interesting, but you need good fighters too. I personally don't give a f*ck about who wins this season because none of them are really that talented. The fighters that actually make it into the UFC will probably just get cut 1-2 fights later.

There has been a steady decline in the last years based on the talent pool.
The names you listed show that too.
There is really nobody on that list which I would say could be fighting for the number 1 contender ship someday.. MAYBE Tavarez but I really doupt it.
I don't know.. but you can't tell me that there aren't better fighters out there these days who don't get the opportunity cause all the UFC cares about are TV ratings instead of Future Title holders.
Don't get me wrong.. these are decent fighters, but we have so much more out there which just makes watching this show so very sad..

Well you are wrong because
Roy vs JDS was a number one contender fight. So someday happened it was last October.
Garza is going to get a contender next based on his back to back highlight reel finishes.
We don't know the story with Brookins and Johnson, both will likely stick around.
Schaub is being groomed for a BS title shot.
I don't think this show has any champions, then again how long did it take for Griffin, Florian, Evans, and Sanchez to get their title shots?

Sorry forgot to add "deserved #1 Contender fight". Also Roy is not really a talent. He's a veteran in the Sport before he joined TUF. He was a special case! Plus he's fighting in the least stacked devision right now.
All of them won't ever make it in my eyes. Maybe I am completely wrong.. but I just don't see the potential in every single one of them.
Some of those will be gatekeepers I agree some will get cut soon.
I even confused Tavarez with Thiago Tavarez.. so not even he is on my list unfortunetly..
