Spike confirms TUF 14 will be it's last season
The writing was on the wall, and now it's also in an email.
Spike TV officials today confirmed what many industry executives had been speculating for months: "The Ultimate Fighter 14" will be the last season of the reality competition series to air on the UFC's longtime cable partner.
"'The Ultimate Fighter' season 14 in September will be our last," the statement read. "We are increasing our commitment to distinctive, original series that we own such as 'Auction Hunters' and 'Bar Rescue,' which are delivering on our goal to reach a broader audience.
"Our 6-year partnership with the UFC has been incredibly beneficial in building both our brands, and we wish them all the best in the future."
The statement comes just moments before the UFC is holding a press conference to release a "special announcement." The mildly guarded secret is, of course, the UFC's new broadcast deal with FOX.
Bellator Fighting Championships, which currently broadcasts on MTV2, is said to be a leading candidate to provide Spike TV MMA programming following the UFC's impending departure. However, Spike TV officials declined to comment on that possibility.
"TUF 14" debuts Sept. 21. The show, which features Michael Bisping and Jason "Mayhem" Miller as coaches, features 32 fighters (16 bantamweights and 16 featherweights). Half of the cast will be axed following an elimination round of fights.
That along with the press conference going on right now nails it...
