Opinions on different game genres?
What is your opinion on different game genres? Your favorites, least favorites, opinions in the direction that certain genres are going, etc.
RPG games are my favorite genre, both JRPG and WRPG. I like most genre of game to some degree, but IMO nothing can beat a 60 hour long quality RPG.
The other genre that heavily captures my interest is horror. It's sad that survival horror games are not as present as they once were and most that are present are more action based. I still love them, though, and a few great games came out of this genre this gen.
My least favorite is sport games and racers. I honestly have no interest in the vast majority of sport games, they are just boring to me and it is the same with racing games. In fact there are only 3 games I like out of these genres - bass fishing games, Twisted Metal and Mario Kart.
I'd also say FPS is very stale right now and I miss the way it once was. I really dislike modern military shooters and most of the FPS games that release are just...boring. There are a few exceptions like Singularity/Far Cry 3, but they are rare.
This is basically what I hate about the path FPS games are going to in a nutshell:
Anywho, what are your guys opinion on different genres and where they are going?
RPG's by far are my Favorite. I don't really have a preference over East or West, just as long as it's open map with a meaningful story to it. Games like Oblivion and Skyrim, I can play for ever.
I also love MMORPG, first one I played properly was age of conan. I actually vowed never to play one of these types of games, but I was in game (uk shop) and picked up AOC thinking it was a hack and slash game, was pissed of when I got home and found out it was a MMO. So I tried it anyway, since I bought it. June the 2nd 2008 was the day I started playing, and I didn't stop playing it until January 2011. So yeah, I was hooked.
FPS's are kind shit these in regards to single player campaigns, the only exception I can think of is Dead Space 3 and Borderlands 2 (which is excellent). FPS these days are designed with multiplayer in mind, the single player campaigns are an afterthought, which is a waste really. However Battlefield 2 & 3 have excellent multiplayer arena's. I love the BF2&3 multiplayer game with their destructible buildings and massive maps, also the way team play is encouraged as opposed to a game like COD where always seems to be everyman for himself (which is fine if thats how you prefer to play).
I love beat-em-up's as well. Street Fighter, Tekken, Mortal Kombat. I just wish somebody would make a really good first person hand to hand combat game, with FPS style maps... that would rock. I also love the WWE games, and would have loved to have played the UFC games, these are only type of games where I still wished I owned a console.
I loved the horror genre's as well... I say loved because I don't think I've seen a decent one since Doom 3. Dead Space is ok, but not really scary. Give me a game that has the tension and holy shit moments of Resi 2 and the eerie atmosphere of silent hill.
Finally I love me a good old sandbox game. GTA's are awesome, FarCry's are awesome, Saints Row's are awesome, Infamous 1 & 2 are both awesome. A lot of people haven't played Just Cause 2 yet, a little tip, if you haven't played this game it will surprise the shit out of you, it was probably my favourite game of 2010.
There is one Genre that I avoid at all costs - Platformers. I cannot stand these types of games.
Sports simulators used to be my favorite but EA has a strangle hold on the entire genre and doesn't give a **** about making games better.
My other favorite was multiplayer FPS games which kind of suffers from the same thing right now.
I like strategy games a lot but CKII is the only one that still has me hooked right now. Civ5 got boring after a few play throughs. I didn't much care for EUIII but EUIV which is coming out soon looks really tempting I'll probably pick it up after a few DLCs come out and there is a sale.
The only MMORPGs I really enjoyed were preexpansion WOW and RO on player servers. I have tried out a lot of these types of games but none of them really replicate the magic because they are just ripping off older games instead of making new and exciting ones.
RPGs have always been something I get really into for like a week and then never play again.
ARPGs are all trying to be too much like Diablo the entire genre is stale and stuck in the past.
I liked fighting games a lot as a kid but I've been over that for more than a decade now.
I've never liked horror or single player fps.
So basically the gaming scene is terrible to me right now I end up trying out a bunch of games and liking almost none of them because most of my favorite genres are stuck in limbo.
most games I play involving shooting stuff, 1st or 3rd person. The MP aspect of it is heavy in competition, which equates to fun. It's fun to compete against people, even more fun to do it with friends, and even more fun when the game offers you countless strategies and methods to compete, which is why I've been a huge mark for games like Battlefield and Battlefront for a while.
Sports games are similar, for me one of the funnest things about gaming in general is competing against another person, in the end it doesn't even matter what sport or what game even. Could be NBA Jam, Forza, Tiger Woods or FIFA, it's just exciting to compete.
Adventure games being mechanically fun to maneuver is cool, but a story that is able to pull you in and make you give a crap make any game exponentially better. A lot of games with cool stories thankfully have tons of interesting side stuff to do and places to go features to modify etc.,.
What games to you guys consider to be RPG, JRPGs, PRPGs, or ARPGs?
I don't really feel like I've played RPGs since PS1 and SNES days with their Final Fantasy games, Secret of Mana, Chrono games and a bunch others I'm probably forgetting.
Western RPGs mostly. I prefer well paced, deep story-based linear RPGs with a focus on strategic battles like the Baldur's gate series, Planescape Torment, Gothic I and II, Betrayal at Krondor back in the day etc. Dragon age was decent too but the Baldur's gate series was the pinnacle or RPGs for me, it's been downhill from there gameplay and story wise, even when the graphics are always improving.
I always try but never get very far into mainstream hack and slash grindfest RPGs like Diablo or huge sprawling RPGs with very little story and little point to the endless grinding, like the Elder Scroll games, no matter how pretty the graphics. Most people seem to enjoy them like crazy though.
Also big into the Story driven Puzzle / Adventure genre but those seem to be fading out lately. Was big into the old school Sierra and LucasArts point and clicks back in the day.
Also enjoy some strategy, usually whichever latest Civilization game is out although 5 was a step back IMO.
I'm also on Osmium's page in that I feel like most gaming genres I enjoy have started to suck lately. Online games are the worst, as they're too dumbed down and catering to the rich stupid demographic that will pay $50 for every new weapon and shiny purple umbrella in the game.
I actually worked in game development for a pretty famous MMO game company for a while and have done a bit of indie game dev myself.
RPG games are always great, theres just so much you can do in them.
I also enjoy fighting games, and FPS games like (Medal of Honor/Far Cry/ Battlefield/Early cod is still fun.)
My favourite type of game would be RTS though
I like a lot of different game styles. FPS, 3PS, survival horror, western RPG, strategy are my tops in no particular order. I can still really enjoy the right type of adventure or puzzle game.
I'm not too hot on city building games or 4x (i.e. civilization) type games anymore, they are fun in theory and at first but I can't bring myself to complete a playthrough these days, too much else to do IRL. Never was really into racing games or sports games. Also don't give a damn about most casual games.
If I had to choose a favorite genre I guess I am more of an RPG fan. I love games like Dragon Age, the Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect, and Persona because you have a choice how the story can be told and how it will end.
FPS games are a hit and miss with me. I love games like Half Life and the Bioshock but can't get into games like Doom and Metro 2033. Borderlands can be fun mainly because of the crazy ass characters but the gameplay can get bland and repetitive real fast.
I don't have much ground in Survival Horror. I get lost real fast when playing games like Silent Hill. Because of this I spend the majority of my time going online to find out where I am suppose to go and what I am suppose to do. Save to say I am terrible at games like Silent Hill and don't get too much joy out of playing it. I guess the only exception to this was Fatal Frame 2. For some reason I was able to get into Fatal Frame despite doing some backtracking at times.
I don't bother with sports since I find them to be boring as dogshit.
Real time strategy are my favorite I love games like Total war and the Command and Conquer series that makes me think out of the box.
i also like multiplayer on line FPS games.
