I'm really not like that. Dragon Age was just really blatant about stealing from other properties. Most gamers missed it because they weren't stealing from other games. They stole from numerous movies and books though. And big titles too. Nothing obscure.

And it didn't really put them together in an interesting way. It's not snobbery. Story wise the game was just really weak relying on stolen elements to uplift it.

There are only so many story frameworks out there. Most of fantasy owes something to Beowulf, Gilgamesh, Anglo folk legend, Greek mythology, Christian mythology. Tolkein was hardly original and borrowed heavily from those who came before him. Same with George R R Martin and Robert Jordan. Dungeons and Dragons, haha. I don't really see adopting elements from prior work to necessarily weaken the story, its just the natural process of things. Some might call it homage, and should be judged on its own merits.

That said, I really hated DA2.

Except that it wasn't homages so much as stolen wholesale and renamed. The whole mages order was ripped directly from the Wheel of Time as an example. There are so many more but I'm tired right now and I would have to go back and look at the game again to remember the rest.

I understand the difference between homage and ripping off. Mass Effect was an homage to many sci-fi stories. Dragon Age was a rip off. Was it a fun enough game? Yeah. Was it great? Not at all.

Been playing NCAA 2013. I love them but HUGE bummer that you cannot import your guy into Madden 13 this year to continue his career.

This reminds me of people complaining that Pan's Labyrinth 'ripped off' the mandrake from Harry Potter. The idea of a college of wizards has been around since long before Wheel of Time. Everything comes from somewhere.

There's got to be a name for the phenomena where people think wherever they saw something first is where it originated.

It's not the college of mages idea. It's the entire structure, ideology, method of operation, punishment rites, initiation rites... it just had the names changed and made open to both genders. So your example and assertion doesn't work with me because mine is not based off of a superficial resemblance.

Someone who says Pan's Labyrinthe ripped off anything from Harry Potter is just retarded.

Dragonlance had mages' colleges just like that in 1986. Four years before Jordan penned the first WoT novel.

I've read those novels too but the one in Dragon Age is almost a point for point rip off of the White Tower from the WoT.

- inborn gift dangerous if untrained
- taken from their parents by force if need be
- initiated through the dream world through a ceremony that they can't be told about ahead of time
- the emotional/power lobotomy if they are considered uncontrollable.
- an organization of warriors dedicated to their defense who also have the duty of killing them if they turn "bad"

Does it get much more blatant than that? Individual characters can even be linked between the two. It's really, really bad.
