Got 'Tales of Xillia' off the Playstation Store for $10. I had a $20 PSN card and that game usually sells for like $50 so I bought it on a whim. Immediately after confirming my purchase I thought "Why the hell did I do that?" I'm always disappointed whenever I try JRPGs these days. That wasn't the case with Tales of Xillia. I'm loving it so far.
The biggest problem I have with JRPGs these days is that they all feel repetitive and outdated. Like I'm playing a PS2 game. I don't get that feeling as much from Tales of Xillia. I say "as much" because the graphics aren't that great. Which is understandable because the game actually came out in 2011. The translated version just didn't come out till last year. But what makes the game feel new is the combat. It's different from anything I've played recently. You can freely move around in real time rather than stand still and wait for your turn. It's like Kingdom Hearts in that regard. And the other thing I liked is the characters. Good main characters are hard to come by in these type of games because the Japanese always have to be over the top with everything. Character designs can never be simple. They have to have an eyepatch, or a scar, or stupidly spikey hair or some ridiculous outfit. Surprisingly, these guys aren't like that. Their designs are fairly plain and uncomplicated but the actual characters themselves are interesting. The way it should be.
Only gripe I have with the game is the voice acting. Now it's by no means awful, it's actually better than most dubbed games. I just would have preferred if they left Japanese audio in with subtitles.
EDIT: Whoa, didn't realize I wrote so much. Just got gone writing an essay so I must still be in writing mode.
