WECWorld Extreme Cagefighting is an American mixed martial arts promotion. It is the sister promotion to the UFC, both owned and produced by ZUFFA, with a focus on lighter weight classes and talent building for the UFC. As with its older and much larger sibling, the WEC uses the same rules as the UFC, but it holds its fights in a smaller octagonal cage.
He blamed it Wednesday on problems cutting weight. He said he walks around at 212 and said he’d be better fighting in the light heavyweight division, which has a 205-pound limit. Filho, who is only 5 feet 10, said those close to him encourage him to fight at 185 because of his height.
But Filho has a stocky build and said he weighed 203 when he arrived in Las Vegas on Saturday.
“I’m not here to make any excuses,” said Filho, who is now 16-0. “You have to take your hat off to Sonnen. He came with a very good game plan. He’s a very tough wrestler. He knew how to utilize his strengths to do what he had to do.“

Filho has a big decision to make, because he can’t perform the way he did and keep the title much longer. He said he’s not used to cutting weight and said he’s going to consider whether he should move to light heavyweight.

I won and that’s the important thing,” Filho said. “I did what I came to do, which is win and keep the belt. I’m sorry if the fans didn’t think I was myself, but it was hard with the weight.
Wow. First off, him continually making weight still astounds me. He's eventually not gonna be able to cut. But, for now its working for him...bigtime. If he really weighed 203 at the time of the fight Saturday night, thats a huge advantage. Gaining 18 pounds between weigh ins and the fight is the biggest jump I've heard of.
Second, a move to LHW would be awful for him. His striking is bad and he has to be on top to favor his style of fighting. He wouldn't have the power advantage anymore and I don't think he would do that good.
KDS the fight was on Wednesday so he cut 18 pounds between Saturday and the weigh ins which I assume were on Tuesday.
Filho belongs at 205 even though he would get trashed there. Part of his dominating Ninja was just the pure strength difference. If he moves up to 205 he's not even top ten since his ground game is more controlling than explosive and some guy at 205 are way to big for him to control.
BTW him moving up to 205 sets up Shogun vs Filho which is a fight Shogun's wanted for a long time since Filho talks a lot of shit.

Discuss.
Wow, I agree. That is HORRIBLE.
He needs to spend less time on muscle training and more time on striking. Thats amazing. So short and weights so much.
Definitely explains a lot though.
If he has trouble making weight, then he should cut some muscle mass. His striking and his height would be a huge disadvantage at light heavyweight. It's pretty crazy how much weight he cuts though, usually fighters are around 200lbs and make the cut.
If Filho does decide to move up he had better stay in the WEC.
Sonnen proved that he will have a problem with fighters who know how to strike and have good TDD and the UFC LHW division is filled with fighters like that.
Could you imagine his performance Wed. vs guys like Page,Chuck,Wandy or Shogun.
