WEC World Extreme Cagefighting is an American mixed martial arts promotion. It is the sister promotion to the UFC, both owned and produced by ZUFFA, with a focus on lighter weight classes and talent building for the UFC. As with its older and much larger sibling, the WEC uses the same rules as the UFC, but it holds its fights in a smaller octagonal cage.

Filho out of Rehab eyeing Return

Quote:
"The doctor has released Paulo from the rehabilitation center, and Monday he returns to train. Paulo is already running, making a diet, a set diet and from 102 kilograms (224 lbs) he has already dropped to 95 kilograms (209 lbs). He is leading a normal life and is well motivated. About his return, the WEC will decide the ideal date, but he will be ready when they call.”

Jorge Guimaraes — the manager for WEC Middleweight Champion Paulo Filho — talks about the recovery progress of his fighter. Filho was booked to rematch Chael Sonnen at this past Wednesday’s WEC 33 event. However, he had to pull out of the bout because of depression-related substance abuse and check into a rehab facility. Sonnen went on to fight and defeats Brian Baker at WEC 33, solidifying his status as the number one contender in the middleweight division. Could we see Filho-Sonnen II added to this June’s Faber-Pulver card? We’ll have to wait and see.

This is great news and I cannot wait for Filho to come back healthy.

Good news. Happy to hear he's set on returning to training right away. Can't wait till he rips Sonnen's arm off again so he really has something to cry about.

My guess is this is the main event of the August card that has Marcus Hicks facing Jamie Varner.

Was it ever released what substances he was abusing, I think I heard someone say it was steroids? And did the depression cause the substance abuse, or did the substance abuse cause the depression?

Is it just me, or has he looked quite a bit smaller than he did in Pride? And if I'm not mistaken, they didn't test for roids in Pride. I dunno. I'm not gonna go as far as assuming he was on roids, but it does make a lot of sense.

EDIT: I just found this old article involving Hendo. Doesn't prove anything, but it's interesting. And also, depression is a known side-effect of coming off of steroids. So, even though it's all speculation, it's quite possible.

Good call bbjd7. You are probably right. That would be the perfect card to put him on. It gives him enough time and stacks the card WEC style with 2 title fights. That would be great. I wish Filho luck with his rehab and return.

Where is Filho training?

Is he still doing the backyard training or is he with an actual school now?
