Miguel Torres talks next fight, working with Cotto and more
New Miguel Torres interview.
Quote:
On his future plans and next fight...
"They wanted me to fight in December, but they kind of caught me at a bad time. I already had my whole October and November booked up for travel, so there was no way I could train for a fight and do all of the traveling that I had to do. I told the WEC the next time I fight, I'm going to be in somebody's gym for 2 months. I'm not going to travel and do all of these other things that I used to do before. The most important thing for me to do is to win my fights! That's my main goal and my main focus, so I have to have at least 2 months notice so I can go out there and do it."
On working with Mark DellaGrotte...
"When I first met Mark, we didn't work out with each other, we just kind of hung out a little bit. It was a feeling out process. We knew I would be working out with him, but he had other fighters who were his main priorities and I didn't want to step on anybody's toes like that. Then, we met up again and went out and talked to get to know each other first. Then, when I got to the gym to workout, I didn't work out with nobody else but Mark. I sparred with Mark. I respect that because a lot of guys who are coaches and trainers, they don't even put gear on. They just sit there and talk and tell you what to do. Not Mark though. He spars with me and I respect that a lot. I saw he had things he could show me. The way he holds pads and everything about him fits my style. I don't need somebody to change me. I need somebody to make me a better person and if that person can understand me and knows where I'm coming from, they can get me to perform better than someone that doesn't know me."
On recent comments made by Bernard Hopkins regarding MMA...
"It's cool man. Come into MMA. Come into my gay sport and see what it has to offer for you. I'll put him in a gay choke until he calls me his daddy. I've been hearing a lot of stuff about that and they're just scared man. We're the new kids on the block and we're starting to take over. They see the writing on the wall."
On working with Miguel Cotto...
"I'm working with his sparring partners and coaches. Of course, me and him aren't going to spar because I'm not a southpaw and it wouldn't make sense. It's really the whole experience of fighters feeding off of another fighter's energy. I know who he is and he knows who I am and we're just giving each other support man. I get to see how he trains and get a little taste of his culture because every fighter has a different culture; the way they train and the way they go about doing what they do. I'm here to learn from the best."
