I posted this in standup techniques, and realized it might fit better in this thread.

I have no experience in any martial arts, but am very interested. I don't plan on ever competing, but would like to learn some fighting skills. The only expeience that I have is from brawls way back in highschool. I have learned a lot from watching the UFC, but would like to actually practice. I enjoy all aspects of MMA from standup and grappling to ground & pound and wrestling. I would like to get some feedback on what you would recommend for me to gain some skills in case of a street brawl or a time occurs to defend myself(eg. ta kwon do?, judo?, karate?). Any advise is appreciated.

Ok first all, a MMA fight wont be like a brawl. These guys know alot. There are not any more people like "Tank" left that only were slugfests. :) But honestly if you go to....

Subfighter.com

You may be able to find a gym or two by you. Alot of place have or will let you, if you ask take some classes free. To see if you like them. Basically if you want to compete in any MMA sport you need a stand up game (boxing or muay thai), a ground game (BJJ or judo), and takedown and takedown defence (BJJ, *****, wrestling, judo).

Have fun. ;) :D

wrestling?

I started training for mma around 3 or 4 months ago i do cardio and strength at least 3 times a week (usaly more.) and train thai boxing and bjj , im wondering if i should start wrestling aswell i have no previos expeince but i know how important wrestling is for mma (for things like takedowns etc.)but would it be more worth while to train another art form or is wrestling realy essential to bee a complete fighter. Get back to me

Boxing or kick-boxing. If you meet a ground guy on the street, use your friendly neighborhood thumb gouge into the nearest eye as hard as you can. Also if they get full mount immediately cover your head with one arm and grab their balls with the meanest, hardest, most violent grab and try to rip em off/if its hard to grab em under their pants just punch at em violently. When they are incapacitated this is the moment for hammer fists (ball your hand up tight and slam it on their head/throat) until your hearts content.

Also do not underestimate a good kick in the balls, a lot of the time they drop their head for a good knee to the face or a mean standing hammer fist to the back of the head. Once they are on the ground its gravy, soccer kick at their head as well as stomp.

Besides that go to a kick boxing gym and they will teach you all you need to know to defend yourself in a fight.

oh and always try to avoid fighting if it is possible, no one really ever wins
