11/08/10 - Source: Bisping likely to get Sonnen or Cote after Akiyama
Michael Bisping is still more than a month away from facing Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 120 in October, but his follow-on fight is already under consideration.
Sources close to the situation tell Fighters Only that Bisping is likely to find himself facing either Chael Sonnen or Patrick Cote depending on the outcome of his fight with Akiyama.
Bisping has been eager to earn a title shot for some time and if he can get past Akiyama he is “very likely” to find himself matched with Sonnen, the sources say.
If he loses to Akiyama, he is more likely to find himself matched with Patrick Cote, a former title challenger himself (UFC 90) who is looking to return to the upper echelon of the UFC middleweight division following time away injured.
Sonnen is coming off a loss to middleweight champion Anderson Silva at UFC 117 lat weekend. He lost by triangle in the fifth round after dominating most of the fight until that point.
Cote is coming off a loss to Alan Belcher at UFC 113, his first fight since suffering an ACL tear during his fight with Anderson Silva at UFC 90.
Bisping was being put in the frame for a fight with Belcher if he got past Akiyama but Belcher recently suffered a detached retina and is expected to be away from the Octagon for some time.
The British middleweight is coming off a win over Dan Miller at UFC 114 and is 1-1 in his last two, having dropped a decision to Wanderlei Silva at UFC 110.
