11/08/10 - Source: Bisping likely to get Sonnen or Cote after Akiyama

Michael Bisping is still more than a month away from facing Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 120 in October, but his follow-on fight is already under consideration.

Sources close to the situation tell Fighters Only that Bisping is likely to find himself facing either Chael Sonnen or Patrick Cote depending on the outcome of his fight with Akiyama.

Bisping has been eager to earn a title shot for some time and if he can get past Akiyama he is “very likely” to find himself matched with Sonnen, the sources say.

If he loses to Akiyama, he is more likely to find himself matched with Patrick Cote, a former title challenger himself (UFC 90) who is looking to return to the upper echelon of the UFC middleweight division following time away injured.

Sonnen is coming off a loss to middleweight champion Anderson Silva at UFC 117 lat weekend. He lost by triangle in the fifth round after dominating most of the fight until that point.

Cote is coming off a loss to Alan Belcher at UFC 113, his first fight since suffering an ACL tear during his fight with Anderson Silva at UFC 90.

Bisping was being put in the frame for a fight with Belcher if he got past Akiyama but Belcher recently suffered a detached retina and is expected to be away from the Octagon for some time.

The British middleweight is coming off a win over Dan Miller at UFC 114 and is 1-1 in his last two, having dropped a decision to Wanderlei Silva at UFC 110.
The trash talk will be epic.

Ok so if bisping is 2-2 in his last 4 fights including one of the most devastating kos of all time. now he fights a guy that just lost to chris leban who took the fight after fighting just a few weeks earlier. Now if he wins he gets to fight for the #1 contender spot. Dont tell me the ufc is doing just about everything short of fixing fight to make him champ.

I hope he does fight chael and chael beats him so bad that you won't be able to recognize him after the fight.

IF Bisping beats Akiyama (and I don't think he will) I don't see how beating Bisping puts Sonnen right back at title contention. If anything Sonnen will need to beat Bisping and the winner of Marquardt vs. Palhares to get a shot. Also, it's Palhares, I don't think that'd be enough. He'll have to beat Marquardt again I think.

We shall soon see, but I wouldn't mind watching Bisping vs. Sonnen. The trash talk really would be hilarious as others have mentioned.

Beat him bad with what? His pillow fists. IMO he has some very weak ground and pound. He is a great wrestler but he can not finsh many people. But even so. In this fight i really dont have a favorite. I am not a fan of either guy.

The pre-fight shenanigans will be hilarious. I think it'll be pretty entertaining actually.

Cote would probably rock em, so for the sake of Bispings career he shoudl win against Akiyama to propel himself to Chael. Otherwise two back to back losses means he's on the outs...

Lol Bias is massively on view. Bisping is a solid top 10 MW probably 10th or so. I don't see how getting Ko'd once is this massive chip against him. Chuck has been Ko'd numerous times but no-one says that makes him a shit fighter. bisping will never hold a title, but he's not as shit as half the haters make him out to be. I don't care if people state they don't like a guy, but don't belittle his skills because of that.

Bisping showed an excellent bottom game against Kang but Chael is a completely different animal to contend with. Chael wont be fighting to pass, he'll sit in Bispings guard and beat him up with punches.

I agree he isn't a bad fighter but he doesn't deserve a #1contender fight.he lost to wandy who lost his previous fight. He fought Dan miller who was on a 2 fight losing streak and now he fights akiyama who just lost and then he gets a shot at chael for a title shot. He needs wins over better fighters to get a #1 contender shot.

So the bottom line here is Sonnen is one win away from a rematch. And IMO Akiyama v Bispin is a 50/50 fight.

If Akiyama wins, is he fighting Sonnen for #1 contendership status?

Wanderlai, Okami, Leben are all more deserving - than either Bisping or Akiyama. A win in one of their next match-ups against each other would be even more punctuating.

Whatever, I want to see the rematch just as much as anyone.
