There's no way BJ had dislocated ribs in that fight. I would never argue the fact he may have been injured, but with the ground battles and grappling that was going on, there's just no way he had a freeking dislocated rib (who the hell came up with that anyway? you can break a rib clean off, but you can only dislocate a joint) The 2 most painful bone breaks in the human body are the femur and the ribs in that order. I can believe that maybe he broke a rib during the fight, but not before. Excuses Excuses, if it was really that bad, he shouldn't have fought. BJ decided not to say anything about it before the fight so he can't really say anything now.

P.S. There's no way a guy with broken ribs is gonna stop Matt Hughes from taking him down the way Penn did. Being pressed up againsed the fence like that and having to bend over and keel over and all that, forget it. The only thing of BJ's that's broken is his ego. HAHA psycho - I think not

He said that his rib was separated. This occurs when a rib is separated from its costal cartilage, and it causes serious pain. What makes you doubt what he says? To me, something was clearly wrong with him at the end of that second round.

Just read the Arlovski interview after his last fight with Sylvia. Even with a broken foot, Arlovski wouldn't even bring that up in his answers. In fact, they found out from one of his trainers, it wasn't even Arlovski that blabbed about it. If Penn had said somethin before the fight, he could say something after the fight. He kept it to himself then, he should keep it to himself now. I don't care if he had a broken rib or not, he lost. If you're not able to fight, don't fight, if you do anyway, then don't bring up your injuries AFTERWARDS.

he got injured when he took Matts back, he felt the ribs seperate, but kept fighting....if you have not seperated a rib....you can not really comment on it, it hurts, I am surprised that he could even come and do anything....that is a very painful injury...and he did not start making excuses, he was interviewed and answered the questions.

I agree. Although Ken is my favorite fighter, a similar thing happened with his torn ACL. If he had it torn he should not have fought. If he did, thats not a great excuse. BJ had a more valid one than Ken.

As for Arlowski, I had no idea. Kudos to him for keeping quiet about it.

Well if BJ got injured DURING the fight, then I will admit I have NO arguement. I am a little confused because I have heard many other claims that he was injured going into the fight. I have alot of respect for BJ, and if he got injured during the fight and didn't give up, then he's a true champion regardless of wheather or not he has the belt. I will have to look into this more. Please post if you know the answer for sure

from BJ's website...(this was in another post as well)

Interviewer:
Take us through the second round.

BJ:
I felt great going in, Matt started trying to take me down from my right leg, it's something I expected he might do. He got me down against the fence, but I was thinking about this position alot and I was ready. When he went for a big elbow, he missed and I capitalized and started going for his back. At this moment, when I was making the turn towards his back, I felt my ribs seperate on my right side. Although I didn't know the severity of the situation. I was thinking I have to finish him now because I knew something was wrong. Matt defended himself well and got through the round. When I got up to walk to my corner, I knew something was wrong, but I didn't want to talk about it with my corner. I wanted to be the champ. I wanted to keep fighting.

Interviewer:
What about round 3?

BJ:
I remember standing up out of the corner in pain. But I was thinking, "Earn your title this is what you have to do to get your belt back, fight through the pain". I knew the oppurtunity I had with getting this fight, especially after losing my last fight. I wasn't going to quit on the corner. I kept going because I honestly believed it was destiny. When me and Matt were boxing I felt like I couldn't breathe and had no mobility in my core. But I kept thinking something good is going to happen. When Matt started dominating the stand up I tried for a takedown. I had nothing and pulled to guard. I felt like I couldn't do anything on the ground. But I was still positive. Matt hit me in the ribs from half guard. The pain was so excruciating I had to use my far hand to block it. I would rather Matt pass my guard and punch my face the hit my ribs. When Matt was in his favorite position that he likes. I was still thinking I was going to win somehow. Big John gave me plenty of time. I practiced defending against that position with flexibility, but I had none with my core. Even when Big John stopped the fight, I was still so positive I thought I escaped. Congratulations to Matt, he is a great fighter. It's not his fault that that happened, he fought like the champion he is. He deserved the victory.

Thanks alot. I must admit, I'm not really sure what to think now. I still think a guy has more class letting that info come out naturally like Arlovski did. The point of my thread was not to disrespect BJ, just so nobody gets it twisted. I give him kudos for at least not saying anything during the fight (to his corner).

Yeah, for sure he was the better fighter. I really hope to see BJ/Hughes 3 aswell. We most likely will because they've each won one fight now, and that's the thing with fights, anything can happen so you almost have to go 3 fights now. It's becomming the norm. I really do believe BJ would've won that fight too if it wasn't for the injury. He dominated Matt, not only did he seem to be the better fighter, he was also the smarter fighter. He stayed so calm and relaxed, that's why I think Matt acted so cocky afterwards - because he was clearly outmatched the entire fight.

BJ Penn is MADE to beat Matt Hughes. I think he's the one guy who could beat Matt over and over and over each and everytime they ever fought.

i think the reason BJ had to mention the fact that his ribs were seperated was because, idiot Matt called him out after the fight, saying he was out of shape..BJ just wanted to make it clear that his conditioning wasnt the problem.

There will be a rematch anyway.

Always a rematch.

Matt is a poor winner.
I love his game coming from a wrestling background myself, but the guy needs to stop with the pity routine. He just can't admit that other people are on his level. GSP was winning and got caught and BJPenn had completely stopped his attempts at takedowns and it was looking good for BJ. Things happen, and Matt deserves the win in both cases, but give your opponent their due and stop being a dillweed.

I really thought that BJ won the first two rounds but didn't dominate. He almost found a submission twice with taking Matts back then an armbar/triangle, other than that I didn't see BJ do much. He landed a couple of shots and DEFENDED. It's funny how Tito can pretend to bury someone or flip the bird after he wins and some guys are cool with that but Matt says something about BJ's conditioning and he is a poor winner and has no class. Go figure.

Tito, and not that I LIKE him, is about bravado.
Tito will also acknowledge a good opponent.
He is outspoken and outlandish, but he can be humbled.
I gained a lot more respect for him in TUF.

Matt is introverted, and demeans his opponents as people and as fighters.
Matt has an inferiority complex that won't let him believe that his opponent has better skills in any area.
Matt did not show half the 'heart' that Tito showed in TUF.
