As Randy Couture heads back into training in mid-June for his August showdown against James Toney, the UFC Hall of Famer still has other goals on his mind as well.

The 46-year-old former heavyweight and light heavyweight champion isn't done winning titles yet, and while his focus has turned to former boxing champion turned MMA fighter James Toney, he believes that his shot at the 205-pound belt isn't far away either.

When asked if he believes he could be in line for a title shot within 12 to 18 months, Couture said that it could be sooner.

"I think within the next six months I'd like to be in line to fight the winner of the Machida/Shogun fight," said Couture during an interview with MMAWeekly Radio.

Lyoto Machida and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua are set to square off on May 8 at UFC 113 in Montreal in a rematch of a fight the two Brazilians had in 2009, a fight that ended in a very controversial decision. Couture is headed to Montreal this week and will keep a very watchful eye on the bout.

"I'm going to be in Montreal to watch that fight very attentively. I think it's going to be a great fight," he stated.

The Las Vegas based fighter has gone undefeated since moving back down to 205 pounds after a championship campaign in the heavyweight division ended in 2008. Couture is 2-0 since dropping back down to light heavyweight with wins over Brandon Vera and his most recent fight against fellow UFC Hall of Famer Mark Coleman in February.

UFC president Dana White has stated on several occasions that he believes Couture is ranked near the top of the heavyweight division, and that a title shot could be in his future. Depending on the outcome of Couture's fight with Toney, and the main event at UFC 114 pitting former champion Rashad Evans and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson against either other, a new top contender will emerge soon.

First things first though, Couture will look to dispatch James Toney at UFC 118 on Aug. 28 in Boston.

I think he could get it, thnx to his relationship with Dana

I hope not randy would get knocked out in the first by either of those guys....Plus he hasn't beaten a legitimate LHW since his move back to 205 and beating James Toney shouldn't count for anything unless he beats him standing up which won't happen.

No surprises there then, and I'll bet he gets it. If there's one man in the UFC that gets fast tracked to title shots, it's Randy Couture.

No one wants to watch this guy fight for the title when you have guys like rampage, forrest, anderson, jones, rashad, lil nog ETC. in line for much more exciting fights. This guy keeps trying to take all the title shots man.

Randy deserves the shot at Shogun/Machida more than Penn deserves his shot at Edgar, and prolly ends up getting it. With that being said though both Penn and Randy have yoinked so many free unearned title shots that it isn't even funny. Penn's shot will eb his 5th unearned one in a row, this'll be Randy's 3rd or so total. Harder to say with Randy's shot, he has worked on them more than Penn for his, but there is no denying he got atleast 3 of them too easily.

Personally I would rather see winner of Rampage-Rashad fight for the belt next, and Randy can have the shot after that if he beats a top 5 guy after beating Toney. It'll prolly be Randy's last run at the title.

was there not some clause in the Coleman/Couture match where the winner was garunteed a title shot if I recall correctly?

if thats the case, and I think it is then the UFC could be under contract to give Randy a title fight, dont get me wrong I think that was a really bad decision by the UFC made before the Coleman fight but it does mean he is going to get it anyway.

This is ridiculous. The guy only asks for the title shot because he knows they´re gonna give it to him.

Even though everybody else has to earn the title shot defeating manyreal hard competitors he will be given the title shot soon. Makes me sick as hell... :angry04:
And don´t give me the "but he´s a previous champ in 2 weight classes", cause those were offered to him as well.

uhh...WTF?

No disrespect to Randy fans but is this guy delusional? What makes him think he gets a title shot after beating Coleman and most likely Toney. He needs to prove himself against Rashad/Rampage/Lil Nog(possibly) and a few other fighters before he gets a title shot.

He thinks just because of a icon of the sport that he deserves title shots handed to him left and right.

That is exactly how I sum up Randys entire career, I have been neg rep'ed many times in this forum for ripping on Randy, and often felt that I was the only one who could see how his career has be forged not by been a top competitor but for been a opportunist, I will always stick by my opinion that Randy is a fraud, he is living proof that the UFC but the business side and PPV sales with tricks like over hyping up there fighters before the sport.

Is the Toney fight even gonna be at 205? probably not. Lil' Nog will probably run through Brillz so him and Couture should match up if Randy gets past Toney wich he should. Couture need a legitimate victory at 205 over a top 5'er.

To be fair, Penn has WON the belt and defended it on multiple occasions. When is the last time Couture successfully defended a belt?

How can he be a fraud? I mean ok he gets the title shots more than others but he still beats the champion.
