I was just wondering what everyone thought about Diego and when or if he would get a title shot? Do you think he deserves one next?

I think Diego will be the champ one day but his personality makes some people want to see him get his ass kicked so there will be plenty "Diego sux" in this thread.
I think he is definately going to get a shot. I think Diego would take Hughes or would put up a good fight with GSP. The person I see being the biggest threat to Diego in that weight class is Jon Fitch.
Is it still rumored Sanchez v. Riggs at 66? I can't see how this could be an exciting matchup. Maybe Parisyan v. Riggs...

Yep, one day he will be but as of now, he is not on par with the top 3 in his division, hughes, GSP and BJ. I see him and BJ having a match sometime in 2007, I hope they do , would be a great match to see. Then again everyone wants to see Hughes vs Penn 3. /shrugs

With the way he destroyed Karo, he looks ready to fight anyone. I would like to see Diego fight Hughes, either way he must be next in line for title shot after Georges.

I think Hughes vs. Diego would be an interesting match! Diego would hold his own and he has proven that he can take on the top contenders! Def championship material!

Earlier when I said Diego's only threat is Jon Fitch I only left Penn out coz I am assuming he is going to be out for a while (year?) rehabing his ribs. When BJ gets healthy that would be great. I would have that one dead even if not a little for Penn, depends on how his rehab goes.

Diego / Riggs is slated for the next UFN....Its common knowledge that he will get a title shot soon, but Hughes is way too strong and seasoned for Diego, so it will be a short night for Mr. Sanchez. PS Diego Sucks

Bj would own sanchez this fight is a huge mismatch bj is greater at every element of the game. Sanchez cant beat him standin or on the ground this is gona be a wake up call for sanchez cos bj is gonna make him look like a nobody i dont understand how some of u even think sanchez has a chance he is overrated and bj will expose him for the Nobody that he is bj would beat sanched with a broken rib. And the flue this mathup wil be very entertaing cant wait to see sanchez get dominated

I think Diego has the ability to win a fight against Hughes, BJ or GSP, but I dont think he will. Hughes is just too strong and GSP and BJ are just too skilled...not that Diego does not have good skills, just not good enough. Out of the three, I think his best fight would be Hughes just because I think he could force a mistake out of Matt quicker than he could out of GSP or BJ...especially if he stays out of his ground and pound for a least 2 rounds. His worst fight is definetly BJ for obvious reasons...BJ would be wearing Hughes' belt right now if he hadnt hurt his ribs.

GSP
Penn
Hughes

These are all bad matchup's for Diego. I think those 3 can beat Diego, but it won't be in record time. They'll all go the distance with him, because I don't see anyone finishing this guy. If he fights like he did in the Karo(& Diaz) fight, then he very well may be a future champ. The guy is legit.

GSP is just way too strong.
Penn's BJJ is lightyears ahead of Diego's(And Diego's is pretty damn good)
Hughes is just a stronger wrestler. Diego can't bully him around.

Yeah, Diego is a bad dude. You can tell he works his ass off and trains harder each fight, because he improves by leaps and bounds every time we see him. I wouldn't say he destroyed Karo like someone else in this thread, he did get Judo thrown when he swore he wouldn't get caught with that "crap", but he did win the fight and did a damn good job against a really tough guy. I like his chances against Penn, he's not ready got GSP or Hughes just yet. I don't think he'll win when he gets his title shot, because the way he's been winning fights, it won't be very long before he gets one.

Against a conditioned BJ no way. BJ was beating Hughes until he gas'd. Then Hughes destroyed him.

GSP? Thats a bad idea right now. GSP is like a Diego only faster stronger and more experienced.

Diego walked into a crazy good wieght class. Give him a bit he might prove to be the real deal, but not for a few years. Fighting BJ might not be a bad idea. Yeah he would loose the experience would be great. Fighting GSP would be a disaster. There is a difference between going to school and being taken to school. As a fighter you always want to learn the first way.

He destroyed Karo?

Anyways, Diego is going to be a contender very soon, but I'd like to see him face someone with good take down defense first to see if his fight with Alessio was a fluke or if he really is that limited.

I would like to see Diego have a few more dominating performances before he got his title shot. It seems like you win four fights against nobodies and then one good fight against a "somebody" goes to decision and everyone says TITLE SHOT. It's too soon. Like it was siad before, I want some foreplay.

I know I'll catch some flack for this one but I really think BJ Penn is more suited for the LW division based on his speed, height, conditioning and skills. The guy is awesome. Easily one of the best BJJ practitioners I've seen in UFC. I just think he gives up alot of weight to guys like Hughes, St. Pierre and Sanchez. Plus keeping his weight up to be competitive in that weight class makes his conditioning appear worse than it really is. The three of them cut weight to make their fights. BJ Penn can barely make the weight limit for MW.

If you watch him in his LW fights, he puts on a much better performance. I think he could beat Sherk in that weight class. I think he could give Diego a real run for his money if they fought but you won't see that fight for a while.

Strategy wise, Diego wouldn't even take that fight in '07 because he wouldn't want to take a chance that a loss to BJ could drop him down in title contension and a win wouldn't move him further ahead to his goal of taking out Hughes or GSP. All he has to do is wait it out and he has a title shot after he beats Riggs. Riggs vs. Diego. Diego takes him out in the second round. Joe Riggs takes those wild punches that leave him open for a takedown and Diego capitalizes with a mount, strikes and a submissionm maybe armbar.

There was mention of BJ’s first fight back being against Diego. Diego is tough but right now he would lose to the top 3 Matt Hughes, GSP and BJ Penn. He may be the future (I’m not totally convinced) but he is not the best right now and after his last fight he said he was, so I would really like to see him fight one of those 3.

I feel that he needs more time in the ring vs tougher opponents. I think that a BJ, GSP, Hughes match would be way to much for him to handle.

Diego is a cocky kid and I usually dislike people like that, but that doesn't take away the fact that he is a legit contender. He really has been impressive in his last few fights ... Diaz, Karo. I would have to say he is next in line for a title shot and really does deserve one. I don't think he can beat St. Pierre or Hughes, but who knows, most people thought Franklin would beat Silva ... sometimes things don't add up on paper but when you get in the octagon that all changes

sanchez

I think GSP, HUGHES and PENN would all take sanchez out. I dont really like sanchez, but besides my opinion, he has managed to win many fights. It seems his conditioning is what makes him out last his opponents, not so much "Skill". That Is why I agree with many of you that the 3 mentioned above out "skill" him. Most of the fights I have seen him win have been final round decisions. Anyone have the stats on his TKO,KO, Submission wins?
