Ultimate Fighting Championship Welterweight contender – ranked #4 on the MMAWeekly MMA Top Ten – Diego “Nightmare” Sanchez announced via his web site that he will be fighting Joe “Diesel” Riggs on December 13th. Apparently the fight will take place on an unannounced UFC show on SpikeTV, presumably a UFC Fight Night card.

With his UFC record standing at 5-0, and never being defeated, it would seem that Sanchez would soon be in line for a shot at the welterweight title currently held by Matt Hughes. The division, however, is one of the most talent-rich in the UFC with Georges St. Pierre challenging Hughes for the belt in November.

St. Pierre and BJ Penn, ranked #2 and #3 respectively in the MMA Top Ten rankings, are the only fighters that stand between Sanchez and the title. And with Penn having recently lost to Hughes and St. Pierre getting his shot in November, if Sanchez were to get past Riggs, it would make sense that he would finally get the shot that he feels is his destiny.

In a video interview with MMAWeekly in August of this year – available in the Premium Members’ MMAWeekly TV section – Sanchez commented, “It’s been my dream and my destiny to go in there an challenge the champion and beat the champion and go in there and knock him out.”

Riggs has had an up and down career in the UFC, both in determining a weight class to fight in and his win-loss record. He is 4-3 in the UFC with a recent win over Jason Von Flue in the welterweight class following a middleweight loss to Mike Swick.

Sanchez is currently in Mexico City training boxing with some members of the Mexican Olympic team and was unavailable for comment.

That's true about Riggs being ridiculously inconsistent. He looked pretty decent against Von Flue, so he's due for a loss. Diego's a bad matchup for him, because Joe doesn't know how to react when someone's on top of him and keeping busy.

Diego is definetly a favorite for this fight. Prettu much taking a step backward from his last fight with Parysian instead of a step forward by fighting someone like penn. But Riggs has some very heavy hands and he could make an upset happen. This fight could be interesting I am very interested in watching it.

I see Diego GnPing Riggs very badly as much as i don't want it to happen. Riggs has been training with MFS and Jeremy horn. Those guys could give him a shot at surviving on the ground until he can land a punch. Diego's standup is horrible and I don't care who he is training with it is not going to improve enough to make a difference by fight night.

i think riggs can pull it off if he doesn't underestimate his opponent. even though i'm rooting for him, dude's just a leeeee-tle overconfident.

I dont think Sanchez will have too big of a problem with Riggs.

I saw one flaw in the report. It said Penn and GSP were all that was standing between him and the title. They forgot one. Matt Hughes. He will have something to say about it, Im positive. ;)

Diego will Ground N Pound Riggs into retirement.
If i was in the UFC they would ban roundhouse kicks because mine are known to rip a mans flesh from his bones with a single kick.

I could see Riggs pulling off the upset. It really depends on which Riggs shows up.He's very inconsistant.
Joe Riggs always say when he losses that he's not fighting like he usally dose. Its funny how he never fightes like he should when agisnt a talented opponat such as Salvery Swick or Hughes. He just makes excuses when he's easily defeated. Diego will destroy him, and as always Riggs will say "I wasnt myself out there!". Riggs is a C-class fighter and he'll get submitted in the first round. Riggs looks [email protected]$$ but he's really not that great.

I agree with everything you just said but Riggs is probably one of the biggest underachievers in mma history. Has all the tools but can't seem to put it all together for a win.
