After claiming the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight title with an impressive win over Chris Weidman at UFC 194 just last month, Luke Rockhold is already looking forward to his first title defense.
And while his next foe has yet to be announced, Luke is adamant about not fighting at UFC 199, as he says he'd rather compete at UFC 198 or better yet, UFC 200.
Why, you ask?
Aside from the obvious reasons that come with competing on the monumental UFC 200 event (teaser here), Rockhold wants nothing to do with an event prior to it, as it will more than likely fall by the promotional wayside.
"I would say May, June, or July, but UFC 200 would be cool," Rockhold told MMA Junkie Radio. "I don't want to be on UFC 199, I'll tell you that. The hype for 200 will be so big it will take away from 199. Who wants to be on 199? I want to be on 198 or 200. That would be cool, even if I'm not main eventing."
As for his future opponent, Luke isn't so picky, as he says he'll take on anyone UFC matchmakers throw his way. And if it isn't the biggest name out there, then he wouldn't mind being co-pilot to either Conor McGregor or Ronda Rousey.
"It depends on what works out. Whatever," Rockhold said. "If Weidman's ready to go, we can do that. If Yoel is the fight they want, I'll pretty much have to be a co-main event to somebody. It better be Ronda Rousey or Conor McGregor."
As for his win over "All American," while Rockhold is proud to be the new champion, he isn't exactly thrilled with his performance (see it again here).
In his assessment, he feels he could have done a lot better
"I was disappointed in the way I did it," admitted Luke. "I can do so much better than that. I was about half the man I should have been in that fight. I didn't fight well at all. Ask my teammates what I'm capable of. I fought to about half of my ability."
If that dominant victory wasn't his best showing, I shudder to think what's in store for his next opponent.
