Fabricio Werdum vs. Cain Velasquez title rematch confirmed for UFC 196

By MMAjunkie Staff December 9, 2015 6:45 pm

Fabricio Werdum will have the opportunity to prove that his dominant submission victory over Cain Velasquez to win the heavyweight championship at UFC 188 was no fluke when the two meet in a rematch at UFC 196.

UFC President Dana White today confirmed the date of the Werdum (20-5-1 MMA, 8-2 UFC) vs. Velasquez (13-2 MMA, 11-2 UFC) rematch with UFC Total.

UFC 196 takes place Feb. 6 in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass. A venue for the event has not been announced.

Werdum, currently ranked No. 1 in the NOS Energy Drink MMA heavyweight rankings, handled the relentless pace and striking of Velasquez, ranked No. 2, with shocking ease in their first encounter, leading to the unthinkable scenario where it was the then-champion who was visibly fatigued after only two rounds. An exhausted Velasquez shot for a takedown and was caught in a fight-ending guillotine choke at the 2:13 mark of Round 3.

Some feel that Velasquez was ill-prepared for the altitude in Mexico City. Werdum spent 34 days in town to acclimate while Velasquez was only in Mexico City for two weeks prior to the bout.

No other bouts have been announced for the event.

This company sucks.

Ronda gets obliterated and gets a rematch.
Cain gets obliterated and gets a rematch.

Dark days boys and girls.

I think Cain will win the rematch interestingly enough. From there I don't know what happens. Personally I think Arlovski winning would be something to behold. He definitely has a stronger chance against Werdum since they've already met once before.

Cain on his A game with unlimited cardio is something else...

And yet I have people telling me Dana White loves Carlos Condit cause they didn't do Hendricks Vs Lawler 3. Just can't win.

Hendricks/Lawler were close fights.

Ronda vs Holly and Cain vs Werdum were not.

Lawler vs Condit is a fresh and super exciting fight and has potential to be an all time classic those other two fights that are happening aren't fresh and aren't terribly exciting.

Who ?

I havent seen a soul hurt over not doing lawler hendricks 3. Not a single soul.
Dana has always had company guys, all you have to do is look at main events, bonuses, losing streaks, and tune-up fights and you can easily see the guys Dana likes.

Carlos Condit getting a title shot over Hendricks and Woodley, pretty good sign he likes Carlos.
^That. I'm not just defending the UFC it's just that I was like "How can I read that then this? It's constant bashing around here". I don't like instant rematches for clear wins. Especially Cain. He was hardly an unstoppable dominant champ. He looked cracking when he won but it WAS 2 title defences. Rousey I'd like to see get a tune up fight first against someone who isn't in the title picture that we'd never see fight her otherwise.

Don't care for the quick rematch treatment, if Cain wins it back then gets injury after injury again I'll be pissed off.

The rematch will be a great fight. Cain did well in the first round then just got lit up by Werdum after that. I've never see Cain look that poor in a fight besides JDS 1. It's like the guy couldn't breathe.

yay another undeserved instant rematch i love this

I hope that even before the first punch is thrown, Werdum steps funny and breaks his ankle, stopping the match and losing the belt. Then Cain gets a cold and can't fight or defend the belt for 3 years.

The instant rematch is a very dangerous proposition for the fighter who lost the first fight. Penn vs Edgar is a great example.

Where do you go after that? You have 2 losses to the now champ and typically people aren't begging for a 3rd.

I understand Cain probably thinks it was a huge fluke and there's no chance he'll lose again... but the risk is certainly there.

I seem to remember Werdum hooked up his jab pretty quickly. Cain was getting stung by it all through the first round. Im not sure if altitude has got anything to do with Cains ability to deal with a rangy jab so early in the fight. ( I really hope im remembering the fight right )

Werdum was landing his jab nicely in the first. It just looked like it was going to be a great fight after round 1, both guys were getting off. Then about a minute into the second round Cain lost all his volume and was just getting lit up.

If and when he loses again, where does Velasquez go? Can he even make 205? Yet another unwarranted immediate rematch/cash grab by Uncle Dana and co. Admittedly, Cain's chances are much better fighting in his own backyard, but nothing from the last fight makes me think the outcome will be different. It could be a longer contest, but Fabricio has a better chance of finishing the fight standing or on the ground.
