What you need to custom-build a UFC champ

By JOSE RODRIGUEZ, MANAGING EDITOR

The beauty of mixed-martial arts is that it isn't only about a fighter's fists or chin. Unlike other bloodsports, MMA is a whole-body experience.

So, with that in mind, I'd like to take this opportunity to build the perfect Ultimate Fighting Championship warrior.

Again, this Frankenstein experiment is far from scientific and it's sure to spark some debate over whether this writer hit the mark or missed by a mile.

Anyways, here goes...

FISTS: Chuck Liddell's. Doesn't matter where the Iceman punches from, it tends to land on the button. There are plenty of groggy noggins out there that can attest to that.

CHIN: World heavyweight champ Tim Sylvia has yet to be knocked out in 24 fights as a pro. It could be that many fighters need a ladder to land one on the kisser of the 6 ft.-8-ins., 260- lbs. giant. He has, though, taken some doozies. But after shaking off the cobwebs, has usually comes back to win the fight.

ELBOWS: Canadian David Loiseau takes this one. The Crow, who lost his middleweight title fight with Rich Franklin in March, throws some of the nastiest elbows in the business. Though, after watching Tito Ortiz feed Ken Shamrock in UFC61, Loiseau may be in danger of losing the honour.

LEGS: This is a tough one. There are plenty of guys in the UFC with quick and powerful kicks but not one that stands out in my mind as an obvious winner. So I'll give this one to Rick Franklin.

MOUTH: Though most UFC fighters tend to shy away from trash talking, Tito Ortiz is someone who seems to thrive on it. Remember, this is the guy who gets special T-shirts made taunting the opponent he's just beaten. When it comes to mega-mouths, Tito is in a league of his own, with welterweight Nick Diaz trailing a distant second.

BRAIN: It's not just about the muscles and the limbs. An even keel and a solid strategy make good fighters into champs. This one's a tie. UFC hall-of-famer Randy Couture is one of the nicest men on the planet with a solid but not overwhelming glow of peace and positive energy. Even in losing, there isn't a fighter who's more gracious. The other guy who fits this mould is Canadian Georges St. Pierre. A king of the please and thank-yous until he gets in the ring.

Then, there's technique...

GROUNDANDPOUND: Matt Hughes. The former collegiate wrestler has mastered his own form of ground and pound that no one in the business has yet to match.

SUBMISSION: I gotta go old school when talking about submissions. I'll take legendary limb-twister Royce Gracie circa the mid 1990s. As far as some of the new guys go, Renato 'Babalu' Sobral has won his last five fights by submission.

INTIMIDATION: Yes, the sheer fear factor. Hands down, Jeff 'The Snowman' Monson. He kinda looks like a mix between the Michelin Man and Mr. Clean after a drunken sailor's shore leave at a tattoo parlour.

ENDURANCE: Jeremy Horn. At age 30, this guy's already got 96 pro fights under his belt. Enough said.

Here's mine.

FISTS: I'd agree chuck liddell has some of the best fists

CHIN: Although Tim Sylvia has a good chin i'd also like to mention a guy who i don't think has taken the punches Sylvia has but has been punched in the face a ton and still stood up, Nick Diaz, he took a ton of punches from Sean Sherk whos got muscles and strength that rival matt hughes.

ELBOWS: David Loiseau easy, tito isn't even close to the speed and aim Loiseau has.

LEGS: This one's tough, i'd like to say Rich/Liddell/ but im going to go with someone who's got some of the meanest kicks ever and thats Yves Edwards.

MOUTH: Tito hands down.

BRAIN: Randy and GSP are good but i also think Sherk and Franklin just fight the fight and then give props afterwards and are very humble.

GROUNDANDPOUND: I'd have to Say Tito, Loiseau, and Hughes.

SUBMISSION: Eh Royce is a gimmie, so im going to go with Dean Lister, hes simply amazing with his submissions.

INTIMIDATION: I'd say Tim Sylvia, for the simple fact that AA seemed to be so scared of him after he lost the 2nd match they had that it made him loose the 3rd fight imo.

ENDURANCE: Jeremy Horns a gamer but i think Tito, Hughes, Sherk, and Liddell have the best endurance around.

Tito Ortiz or Matt Hughes have the best endurance hands down not Chuck. Chuck gets tired in the third round. Tito can last all five rounds and has ever since that lost to Shamrock. Ever since then hes a cardio machine.

Elbows: Loiseau hands down
Fists/Striking: Chuck Liddell
Kicking: Crocop
Submissions: Babalu or maybe Rodrigo Nogueira
Chin: Cabbage, no one has a better chin than him. He can last three rounds being a punching bag and still not even feel it.

Samoan mixed martial artists or Hawaiians have heck of chins for some reasons such as Hunt, Cabbage, you name it lol. But I think Cabbage has the best chin. Every time the ref stops the fight he gets all mad and wants to go on lol such as that Sylvia and Arlovski fights he had.

Yes he does you idiot. I bet if your sister went missing and you were in the UFC you would refuse to fight or wouldn't even come close to a UFC legend like Couture.

When did he come close to Couture you terd ? When he cut him with his glove in 20 secs ???? OR when he got his ass beat the **** down at 49 ??? Which one are you talking about kid ? He never came close to Couture and you think he fought cus of his tremendous heart or for the $$$ you goofball ..... think about it

Lets see in which one of his fights he showed heart shall we...

Tito: He was winning then he GAVE UP . WOW plenty of heart shown there

Overeem: Once again he just gave up in the middle of the fight

Couture III: He just layed there and took a beating / didnt do shit

Im looking at his fights and i dont see one fight where he showed heart so plz explain noob !!

Heart is Matt Hughes , Coming back from getting kkneed in the balls , punched in the face , almost subbed , beaten the shit out of , then coming back to destroy Trigg , thats heart .

Heart is Nog taking a Highkick to the skull , getting the shit kicked out of him then coming back to defy all odds and sub CC out , Thats heart

Now plz show me when Vitor has displayed his tremendous Heart , haha he hasnt , trust me , ive been an mma fan since you popped out of you're mothers whom

First off every fighter has some sort of heart, and second its my opinion Vitor has heart. Vitor did come close in the first Randy fight way back in 1997 us long time fans know but not at UFC 46 or 49. But what I mean is he accepted a challenge against a legend in the UFC who was dominating at the time when his sister was missing. If my sister was missing I would refuse to fight definitely against a legend like Couture. Tell me how thats no heart? Just because in his fights he gave up doesn't mean he doesn't have heart. All fighters have heart in some sort of way dude. Vitor could have been the best ever. And "stop questioning me you 12 or 14 year old noob" bwahaha.

alright lets put it this way little guy , In the real world , as a person & human being , Vitor Belfort has got a good heart , but as a Mixed Martial artist and a fighter .... Vitor has no heart . It's ddamn true .

Besides that point we are talking about in MMA who has the biggest heart , so Vitor shouldnt have been in there to begin with , when you got guys like Nogueira, Wandy , Hughes , Saku etc Belfort doesnt even deserve to be in the same sentence... and cmon dude , lets be honest , who wouldn't be upset if there sister went missing ? ? ? Thats not a good example to use to show Belforts heart

Okay Punishment 101, now its my turn. Why didn't you put Bas Rutten in knees. You know he has some of the best knee shots of all time if youve seen him fight which you probably haven't. Overeem and Rua do have good knees but nearly not as good as Bas and Ken Shamrock (although Ken sucks lol).

lol are you kidding me ? ? ? I have seen 90% of Bas's fights , i own the bas Rutten MMA Career DVD... dumbass

Bas has good knees , but he has way better Kicks and uses Kicks more then he does Knees , which is why i put him on my Kicks lists .... I think both Shogun & Overeem have better knees and use them more effectively, Shogun broke Rampage's Ribs with his deadly knees , stopped him in under 2 mins , and Overeem is obviously amazing with his flying knees that he demonstrates in everyone of his fights.

As for Ken shamrock having good knee's are you basing this on the Kimo Fight ? hahahahahahahahahahahahaha enuff with you

You obviously have never seen Bas very Kohsaka. I would put Bas on my striking list after that fight but there are 5 better strikers then him in my opinion. He has good kicks and good knees. Better than Overeem in my opinion. Overeem doesn't use knees every fight and as affective as Rutten. Rutten ended opponents 5 times with knees. Suzuki, Fuke, Yanagisawa and used them every fights. But his kicks were more powerful.
