French striker Cheick Kongo (15-6-1 MMA, 8-4 UFC) has surprisingly become one of the most polarizing figures in the UFC's heavyweight division.

While his intimidating physique and aggressive style have earned him a legion of fans, his tendency to find himself in controversial situations have left other fans observers questioning Kongo's commitment to sportsmanship.

But despite having a point deducted for an illegal blow in his win over Paul Buentello this past Sunday, Kongo insists he's not a dirty fighter.

"I'm not a dirty fighter," Kongo told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) following the win. "I just try to be a good fighter, as does everyone. Sometimes people just want to put a bad name on my back."

Kongo's highlight film of less-than-sportsmanlike blows in the UFC includes a series of knees to the groin of Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic. On Sunday night, Kongo delivered a knee to the head of a downed Buentello, prompting referee Herb Dean to deduct a point for the second-round blow.

Kongo said the foul was purely accidental.

"I didn't know," Kongo said. "I tried to be careful with my knee. At that moment, he just touched the ground. When I gave the knee, I thought I was safe, and it was correct. But at that moment, the referee came in and stopped the fight and said, 'Yeah, I've got to take a point because it was a bad knee.' I said, 'Oh, I didn't know.'

"With the emotion of the fight, you never know. You can't pay too much attention to that. You're just thinking about the fact that he's off of the ground, so you can hit him."

For his part, UFC president Dana White said he doesn't believe Kongo's blows have been intentional.

"I personally didn't think it was intentional," White said. "I like to believe that these guys have great sportsmanship and have enough in them not to do [expletive] illegal on purpose. Is it going to happen sometimes? Absolutely. I've seen fights on our show when a guy gets hit really hard in the nuts, then he hits the other guy really hard in the nuts.

"This is fighting. Stuff like that is going to happen sometimes, and it's up to the referees to make those calls and decisions. If I think it's something that's bad enough and looks absolutely flagrant and bad, then I'll get involved."

Kongo said his reputation probably isn't helped by his heritage.

"They say, 'OK, he's a French guy; French people are very ugly and blah, blah, blah,'" Kongo said. "I come here to fight, and I just try to give all of my best. I try to change all the negativity. Also, I'm black; I'm not white, but I'm French. Everywhere I go, that's a French flag I show to everyone.

"All the fighters are not like me, but I just try to be very good, very respectful. Even if I'm mad or crazy, I'm still respectful."

Despite the criticism that Kongo has been forced to endure during his three-and-a-half years in the UFC, the 34-year-old said he does appreciate those fans that have remained supportive.

"MMA is a big sport, and it's very good and very dangerous," Kongo said. "Today, you can win everything, and then another day, you don't.

"I just try to be exciting to watch and be at peace with this. About the rest of it, if people love me, I'm very thankful. I'm thankful for the good mood they give me, and they make me better."

I don't know about everyone else but race/nationality means absolutely nothing to me. Religion on the otherhand I'm not a big fan of. Kind of angers me when people say things like "I have to thank god," or "God's the reason I won," or things like that. Makes no sense.

Personally, I don't see his point with bringing up that he's French and black. Kinda dumb to think that has any relevance at all. Anyways, Kongo isn't a dirty fighter. Shit happens when you are in a fight. There are some people that stay calm and collected when fighting, or angry, so they know exactly what's going on and what they are aiming for and what they are hitting. Then again, some people are just excitable and hit what they can. It's not really anything that anybody can help without a shit ton of focus training. Kongo isn't a dirty fighter, he's just excitable and gets emotional. Neither is really good but it's how it is for some. Anybody that's ever been in any kind of fight knows that, because of adrenaline, anger, fear, pride, anything, that shit just happens sometimes.

Thats just the problem, illegal strikes do happen sometimes, but with Kongo it's almost every fight he is in........

I dont think he is intentionally dirty but i also dont think he tries very hard to avoid illegal blows. With him i feel that he has that attitude "well if it happens it happens" When in reality you should probably have the attitude "Im going to the best i can to avoid a illegal blow but if it happens im sorry and hope it isn't serious"

Wait i could be just making this up but doesn't Kongo also have a eye poke in his resume?? I could be wrong.?

I don't think the illegal knees in his last fight were intentional, but the Mostapha Al-Turk fight is another story.

First Al-Turk hit Kongo with a clearly unintentional knee to the groin. Just moments after the fight was restarted, Kongo got Al-Turk pressed up against the cage, looked down and put his right hand on Al-Turks thigh to find the right spot, and delivered a brutal knee right to his testicles. Mazzagatti stepped in and Kongo turned around and slowly walked to the other side of the cage with a triumphant frown on his face, with Mazzagatti running after him yelling "I hope that was an accident!".

Does anybody think that was an accident?

Kong actually verbally admitted to intentionally kicking cro cop in the groin. I dont know where the video is, but im sure one of you guys have a link for that. Ever since i seen that video, i lost all respect for the man. IMO if you intentionally kick some one in the balls (especially at HW, the damage it could do...) you have no place in the sport.

I agree with basically everyone.

A) Used to really like Kongo (stand-up monster, was fun to watch).

B) I'm trying to find it, but I believe he has admitted to intentional low-blows before.

C) If he wants to not be considered a dirty fighter, don't change your skin color or accent, GO ONE FRAGGIN FIGHT WITHOUT THROWING ONE.

D) (and lastly) + REP about his attitude. He's so apathetic, just 'if it happens it happens', as opposed to actually trying to NOT throw them.

Even though he's looked pretty good in his last fights, I don't care, get him out of the UFC because every time he steps into the cage he sets MMA back another year.

WAR ANYONE AGAINST KONGO!!!

Yep Kongo pretty much is a piece of crap. Kicking CroCop in the nuts because CroCop called out the first 10 nut shots he gave him.

"God dammit CroCop, you going to bich every time i hit you in the balls?? Well maybe if i hit you in the balls again you wont be able to talk... youl be busy puking"
:sarcastic12:

I wonder if he realizes that a groin shot especially with someone as skilled and powerfull as him can lead to some serious issues.. Surgery necessary issues.

"I am not a dirty fighter... but when you cry like a lil baby when i knee you in the jewels what do you expect me to do?? the obvious answer is to knee you in the nuts again. Its your own fault for not being able to suck it up ya know?... i think im the real victim here because im French Black ya know?" :confused03:
