Mark Hunt vs. Frank Mir in the works for UFC Fight Night 84 in Australia

A heavyweight matchup between legendary slugger Mark Hunt (11-10-1 MMA, 6-4-1 UFC) and submission ace and former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir (18-10 MMA, 16-10 UFC) is the works for UFC Fight Night 84.

MMA Fighting first reported the potential matchup, and MMAjunkie subsequently confirmed that the fight is being discussed for the card but that bout agreements have not been distributed.

UFC officials have yet to make any formal announcements.

UFC Fight Night 84 will take place at Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Brisbane, Australia. The event, which is expected to air on FOX Sports 1, takes place on Sunday, March 20, in Australia, but airs on Saturday, March 19, in North America due to the time difference.

A native of nearby New Zealand, Hunt’s previous two UFC appearances have also taken place in Australia. Most recently, “The Super Samoan” scored a first-round TKO win over Antonio Silva at November’s UFC 193 event at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium. The victory snapped a disappointing two-fight losing streak for Hunt after falling short against Stipe Miocic and Fabricio Werdum in previous outings.

Meanwhile, Mir is looking to rebound from a disappointing UFC 191 loss to Andrei Arlovski via decision in a lackluster outing at September’s UFC 191 event. Prior to the defeat, Mir had earned back-to-back “Performance of the Night” victories over Todd Duffee and “Bigfoot” Silva.

I hope Mir realizes he cannot stand with Hunt. This is not overrated big foot or new guy duffee..... You cannot stand with mark hunt without ELITE standup skills, and he is only just getting into the "pretty good" stand up skills.

Great fight. I don't really think Mir has anything for Hunt but you never know. Hunt might have been stopped twice now but his chin didn't look weak in either of them. He looks as strong as he ever has been and even though Mir's KO of Duffee was a beautiful shot, I dunno if he has the power to crack Hunt's jaw. On the other side, Hunt can KO Mir almost any time he wants.

Mir will probably try to take the fight to the floor, but I'm sceptical that his wrestling will do that.
