i was actually happy to see the standup matt. he crushed renzo with the leg kicks. i was wondering when matt was goin to try and do his famous run across the cage followed by the body slam.. kudos to matt on a non boring fight..:thumb02:

Yeah Hughes was pretty cagey at first I think, he probably wasn't expecting Renzo to trade with him, but his game plan was solid and he stuck to it. Matt's a top class wrestler but he respected Renzo's talent off his back and his general Jiu Jitsu mastery and decided to stand. Well done to Hughes.

Hughes did good and stuck to his gameplan. Renzo was a embarassment though, He looked like a fish out of the pond. landluster striking and poor cardio, some of the worst I have seen recently. Renzo could barely talk to Rogan after the fight, thats how gassed he was.

in my opinion these fights are only good then the opponents are 35 + , although hughes looked good ...the only reason he looked good was cos he was fighting and OLD renzo, both renzo and hughes need to fight opponents like each other for it to be competative....

for example , i know their legends but imagin putting them in with some of the lions of thw ww division.......hughes v alves result......these old men r gonna get hurt:sarcastic12:

Call it whatever you want, or blame the opposition if you want... I always thought Matt Hughes fought like a champion. Someone who went out there to finish every fight he was in... and most of the time did, if not all of the time. That's a lesson both GSP and Silva could learn from right now.

I was happy to see Matt with a smile on his face, finally getting his stand up KO.

Matt still has game, I would NEVER COUNT HIM OUT.

He still has amazing strength and if you know anything about sports or athletics, STRENGTH is the Last freaking ability you lose, whereas reflexes and speed fighters lose fairly fast as they age sometimes in their early 30's. In fact Matt can probably continue to get stronger as he ages.

Matt has always relied on his strength for his wrestling, and he is always down to learn and compete. If his standup continues to improve, who knows what he can do. He has a NASTY leg kick lol.

Think in 5 years we can have a 41 year old Matt Hughes just as strong as ever with improved standup skills vs GSP again and perhaps gsp has lost some of his reflexes by then. It could be a completely new fight. I'd still like GSP though =P

I have to be honest, other than the leg kicks his standup was pretty bad. Once Gracie was tired he was able to land some shots, and smashing his leg in helped, but let's not get carried away. Hughes' striking is poor compared to the current fighters at 170 and that showed by him getting tagged cleanly by Renzo early in the fight.

I'm surprised some thought this fight was even slightly decent to be honest.

Renzo didn't look fit, Hughes looked old and the standup was just plain awful. Hughes looks uncoordinated on the feet, we were all yelling at him to shoot.

My thoughts exactly, Matt was great to watch, even his loses were exciting for the most part. However I am sure UFC legal is looking to annul that contract with Renzo, asking your opponent to help you up? That was hilariously ridiculous.

Honestly I thought it was a pretty sloppy fight. It amazes me how Hughes has been fighting for so long yet it looks as if he has never tried to improve his hands over his whole career. Not even after being KO'd a few times by the new blood. I read that he said he would like a rematch with Thiago because he didn't train properly the first time. Even if Hughes trained perfectly and Thiago actually made weight, I still see him wrecking Hughes again. His days as a serious contender are over in my opinion.

I'm a huge Hughes fan. I really was happy that he won and it was obvious that he was extremely happy with it. My only concern is that Hughes appears to have no hope in his step. now is that due to age, reflexes or is he feel it will throw off his wresting base.

rofl ! really? That was such an embarrassing fight for both fighters. Hughes striking looked awful, only slightly better than the god awful striking of renzo. renzo also gassed really early and was just flopping over from weak leg kicks. I was so unimpressed with both fighters, it was really an embarrassment in my opinion.

I actually enjoyed the fight, too. I've seen some people say it was embarrassing. I think they mean for the Gracies.
It was just as embarassing for Hughes. He demonstrated once again the his stand up in par with a boxing chimp.

Ya because trying to submit your opponent for 5 rounds isn't trying to finish at all...

Thank you! It was awful! anyone who thinks Hughes' striking was anything but terrible needs to learn a thing or two about striking. Just because Renzo's striking is even worse doesn't make Hughes' better.

Your being sarcastic right??, Hughes is a spent force and would get destroyed by any mid tier WW now, yes he was (WAS) a force once but skill levels have increased and lets face it Hughes should retire as the UFC can not provide many fights that he could win.

He had better stand up not great but ok. Leg kicks and The third round were great but he would not be able to. Hang with the top ten. He is too old to wrestle like he use to and since he never worked on his stand up when he was younger he won't get int good enough to fight top leval fighters and his reation time is going it away as it always does with old age. He could be a gate keeper but nothing else.
