http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2010/mar/23/after-getting-spit-fan-matt-riddle-happy-be-fighti/

Before traveling to Manchester, England, for his first UFC fight overseas at UFC 105 in November, Matt Riddle knew he was probably going to face some challenges.

The Las Vegas-based welterweight was expecting to deal with the effects of jet lag, a significant time change and the hostile crowd that comes with fighting a British fighter in England.

But there was one bump in the road Riddle hadn’t prepared himself for — being spit on by a fan right before walking out to face Nick Osipczak.

“Let’s put it this way,” said Riddle, when asked to sum up his Manchester experience. “I come out and I’m standing in the tunnel waiting to go out. They’re all booing and saying, ‘F you’ and I’m like, ‘Whatever.’ Then all of a sudden, a huge (expletive) loogie hits me right in the eye and drips down my face.

“I don’t like bodily fluids on me, let alone some dude with no teeth in his mouth hocking a loogie on me right before I step in the cage.”

Riddle doesn’t like to make excuses for the November loss, the first of his professional career, but the 24-year-old won’t deny he’s looking forward to staying in the U.S. for his upcoming fight against Greg Soto at UFC 111 in Newark, N.J.

Problems for Riddle actually began a couple weeks before he left the U.S., when he came down with the flu and was unable to put together a strong finish to his training camp.

Riddle admits that on top of that, he underestimated the toll that traveling overseas would take on his body and still hadn’t adjusted to the time difference before the fight.

“Every night, I woke up just sweating — and I was cutting weight so it was hard for me to sweat,” Riddle said. “I was waking up drenched every morning. I was sick two weeks before the fight, and traveling and cutting weight just killed me.”

With all of the problems he was facing leading up to the fight, Riddle said, it was hard to stay positive the night of the fight and he went in just hoping he’d be able to sneak one out.

“Before the fight, I was hitting mitts and I had to stop because I was so tired,” Riddle said. “When I was fighting, I remember thinking, ‘I can’t believe how weak I am.’ I knew I was in trouble before it started.

“I was like, ‘I hope I can pull this one off. But I’m exhausted.’”

Although Riddle was able to survive the first two rounds, exhaustion caught up with him by the final round and Osipczak was able to stop the fight for the TKO win.

The experience would have been bad enough in itself, but it was made worse by Riddle’s personal opinion of Osipczak — mostly that he’s an overrated, tasteless fighter.

Not usually one to be easily offended, Riddle said he was angered by specific comments Osipczak made to media outlets before the fight that he was going to, "piddle on Riddle."

Those pre-fight comments and the outcome of the fight have left Riddle hoping for a rematch with Osipczak — this time on U.S. soil.

“If somebody says they’re going to smash my face in, I’m fine. But the kid said he was going to pee on me,” Riddle said. “I found that to be trash.”

“If I ever got the opportunity to, I’d make him fight me on my home turf and I’d make him cry. The kid is a mutt. He beat me on my worst day in his own backyard.”

His treatment in England has even got Riddle saying he’ll never travel overseas to fight again, except for in Japan, where he believes fans are more respectful of fighters.

And it’s definitely got him saying he’ll never return to Manchester for any reason. Ever.

“I can handle boos. Boos entertain me,” Riddle said. “It’s the spitting that gets to me. And the poor dentistry in England. There’s nothing worse than a bunch of toothless, ignorant people yelling at you. It’s horrible. Worse food. Worse weather. I heard London is nice, so maybe it is. But I’ve only been to the armpit of England.”
I think it's outragous that he was spat on, as a brit that is horrible to hear and obviously makes him think that we are all like that. That behaviour is out of order.

As for the rest of the interview, just sounds like he is turning into Tito! with all those excuses!

I REALLY like Riddle, I think the dude is really cool and a I enjoy watching him fight, nut please just accept that you lost fair and square rather than this crap

If I ever got the opportunity to, I’d make him fight me on my home turf and I’d make him cry. The kid is a mutt. He beat me on my worst day in his own backyard.

Unfortunately UK events are like meeting places to see who has jacked up the most steroids and who has looks toughest. The worst sort of casual fans, knuckle dragging lager louts.
I'm sorry?

I was at UFC 85 -89 & UFC 105. I saw none of what you are talking about?

Please supply the evidence of this. I presume you MUST of been there too, at a different part of the arena. I was in the Nose bleed seats for 85 and good middle seats for 89 and 105.

Yes there were some boos when a couple of fights hit the ground, but it was NOT full of people who are jacked up on steroids and are knuckle dragging larger louts.

Lol hes super pissed off about Osipczak saying "piddle on the Riddle" (quite funny tbh) then he calls him a mutt and claims all English ppl are toothless fools with no class or dental hygeine.

Yeah, I see no hypocrisy here.:sarcastic12:

Sounds to me like hes just pissed off about loosing and makes a Tito about it!

Next time he looses were gonna hear "someone puked on me", "I had a cracked skull" and "I'm breaking world records!".

Boo hoo Matt had a tough time cutting weight and traveling on a plane and got booed and got spat at and lost to a '.mostly overrated and tasteless fighter'

As far as I can tell hes a boring UD wrestler and is not entertaining to watch at all. Props to Osipczak for beating his one dimensional ass down.

I was at 89 and 105 and barring the steroids it was pretty bad. I didnt see many roiders or any at all really but there was a lot of tasteless pricks there that's for sure. Especially near me shouting the most racist shit ive ever heard.

I knew they were drunk so I didn't let it get to me but damn people are clueless. Im American aswell so I took major offense to alot of the comments but I didn't want to risk getting thrown out over a fight and miss the event.

I'm telling you now, seriously, I must be f**king blind!

I saw one guy get kicked out at 89, but I have never heard any of the racist stuff at all?

105 was the best event in terms of crowds as they seem to really enjoy the ground game too.

Everytime I have been I havn't heard anything THAT out of order, I have heard people booing fighters (espically if a fighter is fighting a brit) but havn't seen or heard any racism or abuse of any sort.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a close minded individual, so no Idea why 2 people have said that this stuff goes off and I am oblivious to it?

I've been to plenty of UK events and whitnessed enough attitude, trouble, people being ejected, mindless shouting etc to know a large number of louts are attending. It is what it is.

I've got no reason to lie lads. If you haven't seen any of that then good for you, maybe I will be spared next time.

woah woah woah

I think his experience was one bad isolated event. I've been to the UK more than once and every time there were a lot of cool people, a few wankers and just normal people.

Just like america, some cool people, some wankers and normal people. Be cool to the cool people, beat the shit out of the wankers and be normal to normal people imo :thumb02:

edit: also could someone tell me what a ******* mully is? (sounded: m-you-lee) I was called this the last time I was overseas (not UK) but I just now remember and was wondering.

Its called the wolf pack mentality or dynamics--- it takes a strong person to stand up or defy the pack--- when a group of folks gets together in a crowed their CORE personality shows up they may not even notice it at first sometimes they are even embarrassed by their actions once the mob is no longer present.

A few years back something very similar happened in New York City for the Puerto Rican National Day Parade--- a bunch of guys molested some females and well needless it is to say it was disgusting, reading about those events is where I learned about this concept.

Anyhow it just a thought as to WHY maybe this has happened--- I know quit a few British folks and CLASS ACT is the phrase that DEFINES THEM--- lovely people, VERY DIFFERENT from my ways but I never minded having them folks around me--- Always made me LOL when they would tell me they where going to "chock on a ***", LOL as in SMOKE A CIGARETTE, LOL.

Here is a little something I gathered on it right quick http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig/carney4.html
