Operating room spies tell TMZ Thiago Alves just underwent an 8 hour operation to separate an artery from a vein in his brain.

Dana White tells TMZ the operation -- in a New York City hospital -- was a complete success and Pitbull's first words ... "When can I start training again?"

Dana's answer ... a couple of weeks.

We're told Pitbull will be in ICU for the next two days.

Great fecking news I think. Hope to see you smashing skulls again soon Thiago.

Seeing as TMZ broke the story to begin with, I'm inclined to believe their sources are legit.

I seriously doubt he will be training in a couple weeks. He just underwent major brain surgery, if this is true, he could be out for a long while. Hope he's back smashing people before long though.
