I began using Parkour a little while ago to improve my cardio and to increase muscle tone, but also as a way of training outside of the gym. Parkour, also called free-running, was developed in France by a man named Sebastian Foucan. The sport moved across Europe as a kind of cult movement and eventually ended up in Britain and America, where it was adopted by taggers and martial artists.

Parkour is considered "urban ninjitsu" by some, but is really just the art of going from one place to another and enjoying the environment along the way. Parkour practitioners use Aikido rolls as well as vault jumps and sitting jumps to make their way over obstacles, as well as having many specialized ways of getting up and around things.

Parkour was actually started by 3 men. Which was David Belle, Sebastien Foucan and Stephane Vigoroux.

They called themselves the Yamakasi which means Strong spirit, strong body strong man.

But they seperated!

But yes, it really helps with any training in any martial art training

He's right. And from those three men parkour diverged into three seperate 'disciplines' so to speak. David Belle remained a purist and thos who follow him do parkour in a purely practical sense, no flair, no flips and no marketing. This is commonly accepted as parkour. Seb's form diverged into the lowing artform that is freerunning or 'freestyle parkour' this began to incorporate flips and spins and all sorts of thing that had no practical application to the flow and speed of movement through the urban environment. Urban freeflow is an American business like derivitive of freerunning although it tries to label itself as 'pure' parkour. Stephane has moved into the advertising and film industry appearing in a recent television advertisement for a mobile phone where he and a group of his friends run to a rooftop 'freerunning' style and only discover that the people they are trying to meet are on the roof of an adjacent building. Excuse the long post but I know a fair bit about Parkour and have been a participant (actually called a traceur) for around 12 months. I have maintained it as a cardio activity plus i really enjoy doing it.

Yeah, I use it too, to keep cardio up. Plus it's alot of fun. While the practical purpose of the flips and spins might not be present in the Flow, they are still present in the moment, the state of mind and they help to build acrobatic understanding and ability (which is a must for a lower weightclass submission fighter)

i have a friend who broke both ankles doing this. for some reason he attempted jumping down a 10 ft drop. he landed with his ankles turned inward. i can see this being a great change of pace for people who run often, as long as they don't get too extreme.
