i've been talking about this on some of the franklin vs anderson threads. many fighters/trainers like bas rutton believe this is the most devastating blow you can land on an opponent. if you've never been struck in the liver its kind of like getting kicked in the balls. you just want to go down. but since its a legal blow you either try to continue or deal with getting punished for not quiting. because the bottom line is it's alomost imposible to go on. silva caught rich three times with knees to the liver. so any discussions about the looks rich was giving silva, theres a good chance he was thinking omg what did you do to me??

Ive never been hit hard in the liver so I dont know. But if what you say is true (like getting hit in the balls) that would explain why Rich didnt seem himself after the first clinch. Like he was just in straight agony.

When I was watching the fight it looked like the knees were a little higher and I thought he might have gotten a rib.

I always loved Bas screaming, "uh Leever shots, devistating" during PRIDE fights! anyway, getting Bas's career DVD, you can actually see how horrible a blow it is. a few times, Bas landed one and the dude just dropped like a turd. i think he said he even ruptured a guys liver onces... don't recall.

anyway, yeah, its a mean as strike. mostly you see a kick landed there, but knees are harder to place since it is more to the side and back of an opponent than the front, but Silva landed them and you saw the effect. Rich was in obvoius pan from those shots, and the ones to his face. Some fights you lose because you got beat, some because you got your azz kicked. i'm sure if you ask Rich, he'd say he got his azz kicked!!!

hmmm... my bad... but still, most of it is behind the ribs, so i think the only way to really get to it is on the fighter's right side. but hey, the point is, i've seen a liver shot delivered and seen it stop a fighter in his tracks. and after watching the Franklin/Silva fight for like the 10th time just now, i really do think they had a big effect on Silva winning!


man was that a brutal clinic to watch!!!

I just watched this fight again, and when they replay and Couture is talking, they slow motion a nice liver shot, and Randy even says, ooo a liver shot right there! So I guess that might have been it!

i think the liver shot is the most painful by far....ive been boxing since i was 16 (im 21 now) and the one place that would put me down everytime is the liver shot.......i used to spar with this guy at my old gym, he was a great body puncher, he would give me that mickey ward type liver shot and i would hit the canvas and he would laugh everytime....i ended up fighting him at one of the fight nights at the beginning of the year and i was so cautious about my body that i ended up gettin caught in the head more times than i shouldve
