American Top Team standout Thiago Silva and Tim Boetsch have verbally agreed to meet at UFC 117 on Aug. 7 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif., Sherdog.com has learned from multiple sources.

Silva has not competed since he lost a unanimous decision to former light heavyweight king Rashad Evans at UFC 108 in January. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt known more for his menacing stand-up skills, the 27-year-old has delivered 11 of his 14 career victories by knockout or technical knockout. His list of victims includes Keith Jardine, Tomasz Drwal and Houston Alexander. Silva has never lost back-to-back fights.

Pruned from the UFC ranks following his decision defeat to Jason Brilz at UFC 96 in March 2009, Boetsch will carry a three-fight winning streak into the match. He last appeared in April, when he knocked out Reese Shaner in 65 seconds under the North American Fighting Championship banner. The 29-year-old Boetsch owns seven first-round finishes among his 11 victories.

Honestly... :sign04:
This is another possible bad match-up after last week's Jones-Matyuschenko.
Almost everyone was talking about Jones vs T. Silva and it seems they will fight some fights that absolutely make no sense imo.
How about Thiago's run:
- Machida
- Jardine
- Rashad

and then...Boetsch?!?!?

BAD BAD BAD....:sarcastic05:

Agreed. I'm absolutely baffled by this and the JBJ fight. What should happen is JBJ vs. Thiago Silva and then, if they feel like Boetsch should really be back, than match him with a tough dude like Matyushenko. I really don't get it.

WTF? Boetsch vs Matyushenko and Silva vs Jones surely makes more sense? Baffling fights to set up.

It's like...everyone has the same reaction: What could Thiago take from this fight??. After fighting Machida and Rashad???!!
It makes no sense at all !!!
Jones' fight also!!
What happened with the matchmaking???
I still can believe this could happen

This is a very strange matchup indeed. I'm guessing they wanna give Thiago a run and Boetsch is cannon fodder for him. On a side note, Boetsch made me a fan for life when he just threw that guy on his head like a rag doll lol.

It makes sense if they want him to get back to winning because he isn't going to beat any top guys. But they should have gave him someone a little better. A Hammil fight wouldn't of been bad.

yeah I dont agree with the way Dana is protecting JBJ. Jones is ready to face top competition despite his age, and he's even asked for 5 competition IIRC. I thought JBJ v Silva made the most sense.

Thiago doesn't deserve Jones. Hell, I'm willing to go as far as to say he doesn't deserve to be in the top 10. One of the most overrated fighters in the UFC today.

Because he (Silva) would get brutally whomped by Jones.

Thiago Silva is not a very good fighter, and the guy needs a win, so they put him up against someone not very good. It's quite simple, really.

And, Jones vs Vladdy is way better than Jones vs Silva.

Easily doesn't deserve top 10 for all LHWs.

UFC LHW I could name above him are:

Machida
Shogun
Rampage
Lil Nog
Rashad
Couture
Jones
Forrest

Hell maybe not rank them higher, but I think Franklin, Bader, and maybe even Hamill are all better. I could see Chuck and Vera beating him as well.

He doesn't use his BJJ and his hands are pretty slow for any good stand up fighters. And his cardio is average at best.
