UFC 110 Replay Will Counter-Program Strikeforce's Nashville Event

(Cain Velasquez really knows how to spoil a good nap. Photo courtesy of UFC.com)

Spike TV sent out a press release this morning to announce that they’d be showing a free encore presentation of UFC 110, the event that saw Cain Velasquez hammer Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira into a senseless oblivion, and – wouldn’t you know it? – it airs right at the same time as Strikeforce’s event on CBS on April 17.

Obviously, your hardcore fans are not going to miss a free live showing of Dan Henderson "coming for that belt" against Jake Shields just so they can see some fights that they probably already saw. As great as Ryan Bader’s knockout of Keith Jardine was, it’s not worth missing the Gilbert Melendez-Shinya Aoki fight just to see it again.

But just maybe the UFC is hoping to snag a couple of directionless remote control jockeys who feel like watching some fights but don’t realize it until they happen to stumble upon some. If they come across Spike TV first, maybe they’ll be sucked in without ever realizing/caring that they’re missing live action on CBS. Maybe they live their lives in much the same way, marring the first woman who said yes to a date with them and buying the first car they saw when they flipped open a copy of Auto Trader. Maybe this is a sad, yet oddly satisfying existence. Or maybe Spike TV just doesn’t have much else to offer on a Saturday night.
business as usual for the UFC.

wonder what kind of numbers they can draw. 110 was a decent card.

I'm not sure a replay card will really drag much more people in, after all this strikeforce card has 3 title's on the line. Granted the undercard is pretty weak but Melendez/Aoki, Mousasi/King Mo and Hendo/Shields are all good fights.

SF has a good card going on that I am sure most MMA fans would enjoy. I think the UFC could snag more of the casual audience away from SF. I am sure they would look into buying or seeing it somehow if it was the only sporting event on that day, but casual viewers see UFC and go straight to it.

If the UFC can even get 100-200k viewers away from SF, which they should be able to get around that ball park, then it is a job accomplished by the UFC.

They did the same thing last time against a challengers card, they replayed 107.

I can't see that an old event will draw as many eyes as a live one with three titles on the line. 111 might cause a dent but not 110, card wasn't that great.

It costs the UFC practically nothing to replay a card so if they take anything away from SF at all it is a win. The last line of the article says it all for Spike, they have crap all to show anyway. A UFC card, even a re run, is going to do far better for ratings than anything else they have to offer.

if i remember right, during the fedor v rogers event spike showed main events from a couple different cards...nog v coture being one of them. anyways...they ran that back to back on spike so if you did watch the stikeforce fights you could still catch the ufc fights afterwords. i wouldnt be suprised if the same holds true for the upcoming event. im torn on this though...on one hand, i get that its a business and the ufc is in competition with strikeforce, but on the other hand, mma is not like mainstream sports where you can catch them live on tv almost every night. this being the case, i cant help but feel like - com'on show a little respect for the fans. dont make us have to choose one event at the cost of missing another. sure, mma fans and even more specifically ufc fans are are going to get excited about and likely watch a strikeforce event, but lets get real dana...ufc fans arent going anywhere and mma fans as a whole still view the ufc as the premire mma organization in the world. at least now that PRIDE is gone. -just kidding...okay, not really-

I consider myself to be a fairly casual fan (I don't own a single TapouT or Affliction t-shirt) but having already watched UFC 110 live I will be tuning into CBS to watch what promises to be a great Strikeforce event.

I say if you're really all for the sport itself, don't try to run a monopoly. Competition is good for business because it makes everyone strive to be better.

I just don't see how someone who's all for MMA tries to shutdown every other event that comes along...seems counter productive to me.

Damn I really wish the UFC would stop succer punching SF every chance they get. This is belittling/derogatory (whatever the word is) for the UFC.

Beilive you can beat them based on the quality of your product, don't use underhand tactics, this is like Kongo kicking balls for fun!

eh no surprise, if cbs does what i expect to be a crappy job of promoting this little counterprogramming should find some sucess like the one before. if this puts a dent in a network telivised event it could spell real trouble for sf.

Have not seen an add yet for the CBS card from SF. Probably will not see one until a few days before the actual event, while the UFC will have plenty of ads running for the replay. For the next few weeks, Spike will be airing the ads, while CBS does nothing as usual.

Bwahaha!!

I'm sure you caught on to the sarcasm of my original comment, but I approve of your reply.

:praise01:
Meh, I like my Affliction shirts. I bought them because Affliction sponsors some of my favorite fighters. When Affliction was trying to make Barnett vs Fedor happen...hell ya I'll support the company. I also have GSP's shirt.

A douche is a douche; he doesn't have to buy an Affliction shirt to prove it. I laugh at how it is now 'cool' to hate on Affliction shirts. I like the artwork and they support my favorite fighters. No real difference between them and football jerseys in my mind I guess.

I don't think I'm a badass because I wear an Affliction shirt. I think I'm a badass because I was Mark Wahlburg's body double at the end of 'Boogie Nights'.

Ok, if that last part were true I'd wear Affliction shirts and no pants. I'd be real popular.

I too don't understand all the hate on Affliction. I myself caught myself for a while there laughing at people that wore Tapout shirts. Then someone who actually does fight and has fought in the UFC told me "why would you laugh at Tapout shirts? Do you realize how much they have done for the sport? You are going to laugh at the company taht's done that much for MMA because douchebags want to wear their shit?"

I train/teach BJJ and have done MT for a long time. I happen to love my Affliction shirts personally. I think they have great artwork, they sponsor a lot of fighters and bands that I like, and I like the fit of them. What's wrong wtih that?
