"I’ve been studying Roy Nelson and he’s a very dangerous guy, he likes to trade punches, and tries hard not to get stuck on the ground game. But he’s a dangerous guy, is coming from great wins, so we have to be careful, because he might not have the ideal physique, but he’s indeed a dangerous opponent. We kept our usual training plan and I always try to see my forthcoming fight as the most important one. To reach the top, you have to win your fights and take that seriously, so that’s why I’m training hard, so I can surprise him ... Nowadays I have one big difference, which is a larger experience. And I can tell you I’m feeling a lot more confident on my fights and developing my game. When you get confident, you can develop what you know better. I feel it that way and I believe it’s a growing moment in my career, and if it’s God’s wish, I’ll keep growing just the same as I’m doing now: with great knockouts, great fights and great wins."
Heavyweight (and heavy-handed) Brazilian wrecking ball Junior dos Santos is one fight away from competing for the division title as he charges into UFC 117: "Silva vs. Sonnen" on Aug. 7 in Oakland. Hoping to play spoiler will be Roy Nelson, who has title aspirations of his own after capturing the TUF 10 crown and then knocking out Stefan Struve. Can "Big Country" complete his unlikely ascension to the top of the heavyweight ladder? Or will "Cigano" send him tumbling back down the mountain with his sixth straight finish?

WAR JDS....

Im impressed even after being the huge favorite in this fight, he knows not to underestimate Roy Nelson, JDS will hold the title someday.

I love JDS as a fighter ,and would love to see him win this.

However, I'm going with experience and predicting an upset. I know I'll be in the heavy minority here, and that's okay. I don't think I'm sure enough to put any more than $20 on it, to back up my prediction, but I think Roy Nelson is so much better than he's given credit for.

I don't think this should be a pick 'em per se, but I'll be happy to take Nelson as a +277 underdog just based on value alone. (Current odds at the sportsbook I use)

If JDS wins, I'm happier as a fan (as JDS has more potential to show us amazing things in the future), if Nelson wins, I get a little payday. Although with Nelson showing some good finishes against Schaub and Struve, I'll have no problem with him continuing his rise if he defeats JDS soundly.

While Nelson may be the underdog I also believe he could pull it off... That would get Dana fired up which equals entertainment-value :p

I see JDS taking this but I don't want to bet against Nelson either... Tough one :/

haha cool pic....did he say he had larger experience? its not as if roy is a rookie....what did he mean by that? if anything roy has more experience than JDS doesnt he? im not sure:confused02:

anyway, im pretty sure JDS takes this but i really dont want to bet on it, i really think big country has a very good chance to pull out a victory, hes smart, i dont think hes gonna trade with JDS, not a lot

im guessing hes just gonna set up a takedown and keep the fight on the ground, wich will be great to see just how could JDS bjj really is, but i think he doesnt have the experience that big country has on the ground, and if the fight goes there and stays there i think big country could pull out a UD or a sub

or maybe a KO? though i really doubt that but he seems to have some serious power behind those chubby arms, wich one gets the KO first? JDS :thumb02: but i wouldnt be really surprised to see big country get it

I think he was referring to himself personally. Translations always come across really awkward, even if done by the fighter themselves.

...Good statement from JDS. Never underestimate your opponent is the best mindset to have. I'm curious what the surprise is going to be. Probably those rocket fists that will headhunt Nelson with nasty intentions. I like Nelson but he's taking on a whopper that BK could never serve up. Roy had better not stand and trade with Junior. He doesn't have the accuracy or handspeed that Dos Santos has. JDS has ripped power and I'm sure once Nelson gets clipped, he's gonna shoot for a takedown. Roy has power but Junior can put some mean combinations together. If Gonzaga is a much better version of Nelson and JDS flatlined Gonzo in 1 round. This could very well end up the same way. Gotta give credit to Roy for having a huge ballbag calling JDS out!! My best regards for Big Country...

P.S. The staredown will look like night & day!

I'm not exactly sure how Roy Nelson could win but I would never write Roy off against anybody. Look for Roy to take the fight down and maybe really test JDS's ground game. You never know though Roy could fake the shot and try to land that big right.

I usually don't care who wins a fight but JDS is on my NPFFL so...WAR JDS!

I'm confident he should win to, unless it turns out that his ground game is no good. But with his gym I would think it would be at least decent.

I can't imagine seeing Roy's belly and Lesnar's tattoo, in the octagon, at the same time.
A Lesnar/Nelson stare down would be crazy. In appereance Roy would look like a dead man walking.

Am I seriously the only guy who thinks JDS is a huge underdog here? Roy is crafty crafty veteran on the ground and has danced quite a while with bunch of dangerous (perhaps not as dangerous as JDS) strikers. I'll be surprised if JDS pulls a win from this, but he has surprised me before!
