ok just out of curisioty, and to see how diverse the community really is... would you all mind listing the different martial styles you have all trained in?

for my self its as follows:

Judo
Ju-jitsu
Karate
Tang soo do (just barely)
Ishinryu (just barely)
Capaoeria (sp? and I suck at doing it)
Muay Thai
Kosho shorei
Greco-Roman wrestling
boxing (some light training)

OK thats about it for me, my biggest problem is that I only got like a year or two of this and a year or two of that

I don't consider myself a fighter or anything but I did wrestling back in HS and I'm doing Tai Chi right now. I did boxing for like two months until I got the crap beaten out of me.

I'm a second degree black belt and was certified and trained through the United States Takewondo Federation for 9years then became USTA. I've trained in wrestling, light ju jitsu, heavy boxing, and numerous self-defense courses by some of the most elite martial artist in the south. My strengths are my power once in the clinch. Plus I have heavy hands mixed with quick feet. Once made a guy pass out from a round house to the thigh.

The Don and I have smashed tkd enough, but I think this bears repeating for all of you tkd guys, at least those of you who didn't watch Ed Herman destroy 4 star black belt Danny Abbadi.

I have fought many a tkd black belt, some as high as 3rd degree and if they don't know anything else than it doesn't matter. I'm an aclectic like any good MMA amateur.

BJJ
Roman-Greco
Judo
Aikido (it calms the nerves and has some interesting practical uses)
Kickboxing (just some)

Anyone who thinks that any one thing is "the way" will get destroyed in MMA, as proved in Hughes v Gracie.

Yeah, sorry the response took so long.

BJJ is alot of legs, alot of chokes and working the ground for leverage. As demonstrated by Royce Gracie, it is very much a small-man's martial art. What you learn first depends on the teacher, I spent alot of time practicing how to work a guard into a choke or an armbar. BJJ is really good if you're a smaller guy with a Napoleon complex (which I am).

JJJ is alot more spiritual for me, but I also practice Aikido, so I get alot of that. I practice alot of standing pins in JJJ, just because they don't happen as much in BJJ. JJJ is alot more upper body and fits nicely with Judo and Roman-Greco. It also incorporates joint locks and using them in takedowns.

No one on this forum can really say which is the best MA as a huge majority practice martials on here, with MA varying from person to person creating a biased view. Are you much better at grappling/holding/choking or striking. Its all down to what you find works best for you and then working at it.
