10 paragraphs mate? :p

Nah, I'm just being a jerk... I apologize...

But as people have mentioned, if UFC events were ever to turn PPV where I live (Denmark) I would probably become an illegal (Download or stream)

Paying 50 or so US dollars for an event on between the hours of 4-7 in the morning? No way man

This would be an awful move imo. I would wager quite a few people pay for ESPN over here just for the fact UFC is on it. If they stopped that TV deal they would lose the money from ESPN and less than 10% of the people who watch the UFC events in the UK now will be willing to pay 40 quid to watch it at 3AM in the morning.
If Dana is worried about money he should renogotiate with ESPN.

If the UFC instead choose to move to PPV then they are driving people to illegal streaming of the event, cos NO-ONE will spend 40 quid every couple of weeks on UFC events that are airing at 3 in the morning.

Sucks big time, to be honest I would cancel my subscription to ESPN since the UFC is the only reason I subscribe to it, then just download the events after its been played live, which to be fair I do sometimes anyway when I want to re-watch some of them, but I do like to stay up and watch them live when they are on.

Blah. Blah. Blah.

Like everybody has said before me, Dana will never get any decent PPV numbers over here at those hours. Its nowhere near popular enough.

To be honest, I'm mighty surprised Sky don't have it yet. It kind of implies Sky still believe MMA is a bit of a fad without long term potential. Lets see what happens when the ESPN contract runs out.

Basically, Dana wont say it out loud, but he really needs Sky. His reluctance to even mention them gives it away! If they believed in MMA and got behind the UFC, they could make the sport grow 1000% faster in the UK then the UFC ever possibly could.

Having said that, Murdoch is a twat, so f*uck him and his blood sucking company.

EDIT.
Worth adding that I've been threatened by email for downloading an event after its aired via Torrent. If the UFC leaves ESPN, I'm not sure what I'll do. Lets hope mma-core stays alive, innit?

Lol mma-core has worked its way steadily up my most visited list!
Good point about sky, i mean it can make or break sports in this country, just look at motorcross or speedway whatever it is called, the amount of money pumped in to it by sky is ridiculous.

The thing is sky like to have control. If they got the UFC they'd want their own commentators and first access to the fighters for post fight interviews things like that, which are realistically never gonna happen. Nice thought though.

Does PPV even exist in the UK? I know it doesn't in Germany, we just pay to view the channel for 20 bucks a month and all the events are on it. The only major sport that's on that channel is football though. Boxing and F-1 are all on free channels. As far as I know only the US has PPV and I doubt many Europeans would even consider paying such a big amount of cash for a single event ESPECIALLY since the cards are on at four in the night.

Yea pay subscribers to Sky can order PPV events, but it woudl have to be on sky because the current channel it is on ESPN does not have PPV, so hopefully they wont be able to agree tersm with Sky, even tho Sky Sports does have way more subscribers than ESPN largely because they have the best Premiership football action and every Champions League game, but my guess is most of the football fans who subscribe to SS would not pay extra to watch UFC, where as ÂŁ9.99 for ESPN per month is just a bargain especially when you get some premiership football on there also, so my guess is that MMA fans over here dont have any problem subscribing to ESPN.

For the record F1 is NOT PPV at least not here in the UK, its free on the BBC

i hope they do this, they need to inorder for the sport to expand further into other places + those brits got a free ride for way too long.

Youre not thinking this through. The majority of UFC fans here in Britain wont buy the PPV's, meaning that the UFC will lose everything they have worked for in the UK and lose money, rather than make money and expand. The best thing they can do is land a network deal like they have already done.

PPV does exist to a certain extent here, but theres so few people who are actually willing to pay for it that it is virtually non existent. High profile boxing matches used to be PPV, but i think that fell on its ass because we're wise enough to realise PPV is basically the company ragging you from behind in the shower.

We don't get these events for free FFS. I pay a Sky, ESPN and HD subscription monthly, and then have to watch them at 3am. There is no way in hell I'm paying over the odds to watch an event at 3am on Sky Box Office, or whatever channel it's on. This better not happen.

#29 ·
Well its gonna happen eventually, but yeah i'd rather have what you guys have paying for a channel 50 a month that gets all rather that that much for a card.

I think regotiation with ESPN is the way forward. Just reading the comments on here should be enough to see that PPV will not work.
If the events were at prime time then he may have an arguement but we suffer enough from the time difference on 90% of the events anyways, and as Danm2501 says i pay 64 quid ($100ish) a month for sky + ESPN in HD, just for a bit of premier league football and the UFC!

There's no way this would work at the moment. I definitely wouldn't/couldn't pay for full priced PPVs, though I do subscribe to ESPN specifically and exclusively for the UFC. The UFC is a great product, but they just don't get the exposure or have the popularity they need to go mainstream and charge that much in other parts of the world. Like every good drug dealer knows, if you have good s**t, you hand it out cheaply left right and centre (even give some away for free!) and once everyone's in to it, slowly ramp up the price. The UFC's policy at the moment seems to be sacrificing long term growth, against short term gains. IMO Dana should be making as many network TV deals around the world as he can.

UK fans u guys have to start hammering sky sports with e mails or calls. Trust me we have been working on getting shit on there for 8 years

Erm. . . why? ESPN are doing a good job with showing the UFC events. Aside from the first two they aired, the shows have been flawless in my opinion.

The only 2 reasons Dana would want a deal with sky sports is to A) make the events PPV, or B) get a bigger money deal.

Well, thats your job to employ someone to do, Dana - not ours :)

This makes no sense at all. I mean I'd imagine it wouldn't just be 3-6am...they would replay it also.

But to me, that takes away some of the enjoyment. You want to watch it LIVE as it's happening ,rather than watching something that's already predetermined. I don't know how they expect this to work. It's not like they're going to move the PPVs to a more respectable time in the UK.

Think about it this way, they hold the UK events at NOON normally in the States and they're not on PPV in North America because of that. (I think there are exceptions, but they haven't done well). This is to NA fans that are USED to shelling out big bucks for each event, and now you want UK fans to shell out for events that go live at ridiculous hours of the night/morning?

Epic fail.

I think I'm in the same boat as many posters on this thread. I love my UFC, and I'm happy to pay ÂŁ12 a month to get ESPN (rarely watch anything else on ESPN). I record UFC and watch it on the Sunday night, usually get a few friends round (I'm ruined for the week if I stay up to watch it live LOL).
But if they want me to PPV for something thats on at 3am in the morning, forget it. I'll be gutted, but I'll get over it. Eventually.

I wonder if they might make just the UK/European events PPV here? Bit more justifiable if they're on at 7pm on a Saturday evening. That said, they'll need to offer a better headline than Bisping v Akiyama to make that work....

^^This.

I thought about the possiblity of this making sense considering most of the UK events are starring many British fighters, and there would be a market for it. I can definitely see them doing this. I think they'd be more ready to make bigger main events doing this as well.

The UFC is much too smart to attempt to sell PPV programming at 3am. It's just a ridiculous premise.
