So this is kind of a game, but I think it's a little more involved.
Here's how it works, take a single event in the history of MMA, and change it in some way. Then explain how it would have affected today's MMA world.

Event: Art Jimmerson landed a clean shot on Royce Gracie at UFC 1 and knocked him
Aftermath: Ken Shamrock wins UFC 1, the Gracie's go home and Shooto becomes the dominate grappling art people learn. Shamrock never leaves fighting for the WWE, but the UFC never holds a second event.
Today: MMA is still only in America in the form of "iron man" competition, where guys fight with no rules in bars. Pancrase is the dominate MMA organization in the world, but it is only found in Japan. Admits Yakuza investigations and fixed fighter accusations the company shuts its doors.
There is your example. Here's my actual addition, because anyone could do Royce lost the first UFC.
Event: Frank Mir is never in the motorcycle accident that sidelined him in the peak of his career.
Aftermath: Mir is the dominate HW champion. Randy Couture not seeing any opportunity in the UFC to regain a belt stays out of the UFC in search of a fight with Fedor. After intense negotiation Randy gets the fight with Fedor and gets an extremely close split decision victory. Randy uses the victory to jump himself back into the UFC. Fedor's management cries foul over the decision and agrees to UFC terms and signs a three fight contract with the only goal being a rematch with Couture. In the rematch Fedor wins a hard fought decision. Fedor is given a number one contender match against Brock Lesnar for a chance to fight Mir for the belt. Fedor Tko's Brock late in the first round setting up a fight with Mir.
Today: Fedor having been beaten by a Mir that was never set back back a motorcycle accident returns to Japan. Brock beats Couture in a second number one contender match but is submitted by Mir and hangs up his gloves. Frank Mir now waits for the winner of Dos Santos v Overeem.
